The Focusing Question Task occurs about 3-6 times per module, specifically at the end of a focusing question arc. Student understanding should be assessed through a written or spoken response to a question that is similar, but not identical to, the focusing question. The purpose of these tasks is to gauge student progress toward understanding the module's essential question and meeting the focus standards. Something else I noticed: The module map also lays out an idea of when you should have students complete certain assessments.

This can be a graphic organizer pointing to evidence, short answer questions, or perhaps in the form of an essay.

Students are doing more higher-level thinking here.
