According to the Webster Dictionary, a graphic novel is "a short story that is presented in comic-strip format and published as a book".

Graphic Novels are novels although they include a lot of imagery in it in the format of a comic strip. Authors typically write graphic novels so that they can be understood by the general public. By utilizing images, people of all ages can easily understand the plot. Additionally, it creates more of a sense of emotion when the readers see the pictures to go along with the story.

One example of a graphic novel is Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. This graphic novel is about her life growing up in Iran in the midst of the Islamic revolution. By choosing to write a graphic novel, her story was widely spread and easily understood by many. Her story includes some very tragic, horrible events, and by choosing this form of literature Marjane was able to display those events vividly so people could see the tragedy. One example of a time when Satrapi used vivid imagery in Persepolis was in the beginning, "Mom's pessimism soon won out over Dad's optimism. It turned out that the Iraqis did have missiles. They were called scuds and Tehran became their target" (Mays 23). This quote included picture of a city being hit with missiles, surrounded by a ton of smoke. Without the picture there wouldn't be a sense of emotion like the picture creates. Marjane Satrapi is one author that chooses to stick to mainly graphic novels.

Some popular Graphic Novel authors include Marjane Satrapi, Art Spiegelman, and Gene Luen Yang

Sources:
“Graphic Novel.” Merriam-Webster, Merriam-Webster, www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/graphic novel.

MAYS, KELLY J. NORTON INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE.

A short story is a like a novel but usually written to be able to be read in one sitting.

According to Kelly J. Mays, a short story usually has between 1,000-20,000 words (Mays 32). The five elements of a short story include character, setting, plot, conflict, and theme. Although different from a novel which includes character development over time and many events, "The short story is usually concerned with a single effect conveyed in only one or a few significant episodes or scenes" (Short Story Literature).

A short story encourages a succinct narrative. There also is a minimal amount of character development, and a simple plot. By following these conditions, short stories give readers the opportunity to read and engage with the story without having to invest a ton of time. Short stories have been around for a very long time and are commonly also known as short prose fiction.

One example of a short story is Sonny's Blues by James Baldwin. This short story is based in Harlem , and is about a man named Sonny who grew up and got addicted to heroin, then later in life got arrested for selling and using. After he gets out of jail he reconnects with his family and becomes a jazz musician. This short story, conveys the idea of a simple plot with small, yet important, character development. Sonny's Blues has about 30 pages which makes it a moderately brief read.

Some popular Short story authors include Robert Olen Butler, Tobias Woolf, and George Saunders

Sources: Hansen, Arlen J. “Short Story.” Encyclopædia Britannica, Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., 21 Apr. 2016, www.britannica.com/art/short-story.

MAYS, KELLY J. NORTON INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE.

A novel is a work of prose fiction of about forty thousand words or more (Mays 31).

Novels are works of literature that are meant to be read over time. "When any piece of fiction is long enough to constitute a whole book, as opposed to a mere part of a book, then it may be said to have achieved novel-hood" (Novel Literature). In the beginning of novels you meet characters, then as you read the characters develop and go through changes. Novels often have a complex plot and follow the Freytag's pyramid model, which explains that they include an exposition, inciting incident, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution, and finally a conclusion. The genre- novel includes many different types and styles and can be very different, ranging from author to author.

On popular novel is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Its about a little girl named Scout who grew up during the great depression. She tells the story of her father, who is an attorney and tries to save a black man from being wrongly accused of rape. This novel shows how while reading into the story, the characters develop, change and form relationships with other characters. Novels allow you to put yourslef in a whole other world and experience life in a completely different way.

Some popular Novel authors include Stephen King, J.K.
