Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother.

Book = Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother.

Reviewers full name = Harini Pillaipakkam Madapusi.

Star rating = 4.3 stars.

The “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” is a book published by Amy Chua, a law professor in America, who is the oldest daughter of her Chinese immigrant parents, Mr. Leon and Mrs. Diana, who got divorced. This book describes her strict parenting style towards her two daughters, Sofia and Lulu - short for Louisa, as well as her opinion about the stereotypical Asian parenting style. It also shows how the immigration of her parents to a new country has affected herself.

In my opinion, this book was eye opening as I realised how relatable my family is, showing that indeed, the stereotypes of Asian parenting do have truth to them. It conveyed different aspects of Asian parenting values - such as importance to culture, high expectations, discipline, focus on academic success and forms of art. The book highlights the challenges, conflicts and rewards that come along with this authoritarian parenting, which I found quite amusing as from a third person perspective, it seems strict, however in reality, I have had similar situations. Another aspect that caught my attention was from just reading the context online, it seemed vague. However at the end, as my mother kept suggesting it, I gave it a shot - And I am glad I did, it was more intriguing that I expected.

The chapter which was the most fascinating to me was “ The Cadenza” - Part 1, Chapter 12; This chapter was interesting for several reasons because it shows the war between the strict parenting and her daughters desire for “freedom” or independence. Her daughter finds out about the parenting style which her friends were raised from, which then made her rebel against her mother, she argues “I hate my life. I hate you.” Amy then realises her way of parenting when stating “I realised how much I was relying on external signals of success to make myself feel good.” It shows the thoughts and feelings of both the author and her daughter, capturing the challenges and conflicts in their lives.

Overall, I highly recommend this book for any age above 12; Especially for those wishing to enlarge their vocabulary bank, as well as individuals interested in reality non fiction. The novel helps find out the secrets and potentially the reasons for Asian parenting. It helps provide an insight into the mind of parents and provide an idea to individuals that their parents are doing various routines to only look for their success. This book helps to see the view of parents as well as their children and helps to look at both, the good and bad sides of parent hood.

My favourite character in the “Battle Hymn of Tiger Mother” is Lulu / Louisa. I believe that I do relate to her up to a certain extent; We both are the youngest in the family with one older sister. She has an extroverted personality, however she is not afraid to speak up when a word goes against her; She does speak against her mother and rebels, however she is after all about my age - which makes her personality quite similar to mine. She has a strong nature and a musical talent, aiming to challenge her mother who wants her to live up to her traditional expectations - her resistance to the strict parenting style and journey towards self discovery in the end makes her quite an interesting character.

If I was Amy Chua in “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother”, there would be a lot of things I would have done differently; I would have probably gone for a more balanced and nurturing parenting approach as well as include opportunities to understand my children, I would also create a more supportive environment for my children, allow them to embrace their individuality and create more chances to celebrate our achievements.

However, I believe that if this would have been the case, the book would not be as interesting.

This is because the main focus and plot of the full book is based upon her strict parenting approach, if this were to change, there would be no plot. Because of this, there would not be much changing in the book storyline, however I might take different approaches to challenges in the book; Such as towards the ending, when her sister was sick, I might choose to prioritise her well being and take care of her rather than devote all my attention towards mine and her children - Amy Chua, instead, focused more on her daughters performances.

I found it interesting because it talks about the different ways parents raise their kids and the challenges that come with it.

This book described how Amy Chua wanted the best for her children - by making them overly practice to achieve excellence and perfectionism - just led to her children hating her. This made me understand that even if you might feel your parents are stressing you out, there is a high chance that they just want the best for you; Which you may not have understood beforehand.

At the same time, after seeing their achievements, it has also inspired me to work the same way. It is safe to say that I was influenced to ask my mother to sign me up for violin classes.

A book review on "Harry potter and the chamber of secrets" by J.K Rowling.

Book reviewer: Marwah Shaikh

Rating: ★★★★★

J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" takes readers on an exiting and fun journey that surpasses the already high standards set by its previous books in the series. This fourth installment not only continues the saga of the young wizard Harry Potter but also digs deeper into the complexities of the wizarding world, offering a perfect blend of adventure, mystery, and emotion.

The novel opens with Harry spending the summer at the Weasley's magical home, the Burrow, and attending the Quidditch World Cup, providing readers with a delightful introduction to the magical sports culture. However, the calm is short-lived as the Triwizard Tournament, a dangerous magical competition, is announced at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Despite being underage, Harry mysteriously becomes one of the champions, thrusting him into a series of perilous challenges that test not only his magical abilities but also his resilience and friendships.

This is a wonderful and interesting book for teenagers who are interested in fantasy genre books.

Book reviewer: Tisya Sharma

Book rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Holly Jackson’s “As good as dead” makes the audience feel as if they are in a true crime murder mystery. This book takes the readers on an intriguing and rather suspicious mystery. As good as dead is an extremely haunting and interesting novel as there are many twists and turns all throughout the book.

Pip Fitz-Ambobi is still haunted by her last investigation. She usually gets online death threats in her viral true crime podcast, but this time they are way more severe. An anonymous person keeps asking her: WHO WILL LOOK FOR YOU WHEN YOU’RE THE ONE WHO DISAPPEARS? My favorite character is Ravi Singh. “You're Pippa Fitz-Ambobi. My little Sarge. Pippus Maximus, and there's nothing you can't do.” This quote shows how much Ravi believes in Pip. This also shows how much he trusts her. Ravi is my favorite character because of how much faith he has in Pip.

My favorite part of the novel was when pip found out about someone called the DT killer [Duct Tape Killer]. The DT killer had killed 5 people and he was caught by pip. Later on in the book the DT killer was revealed an dit was surprisingly Jason Bell. This book is made for Thrill seekers and teenagers who are interested in true crime podcasts and murder.

"Rodrick Rules" is a book by Jeff Kinney, and it's, like, the second one in the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series. So, um, it's about this kid named Greg Heffley, and he's still wimpy, you know? But this time, his older brother Rodrick has more rules or something.

The story is, like, not very complicated. Greg has to deal with his annoying brother and stuff. Rodrick is in a band and plays drums, and Greg doesn't like him. There are also some school things, but it's not that important, I guess.

The characters are kinda okay, I guess. Greg is still wimpy, and Rodrick is still annoying. There's also Manny, Greg's little brother, but he's just a baby and not very interesting. The mom and dad are there too, but they're, like, just normal parents.

The writing is, like, simple, which is good for a ninth-grader like me. There are some funny drawings, but they're not, like, super amazing or anything. It's, you know, just a diary style book with some doodles.

I didn't really like this book that much. It's not as funny as the first one, and the plot is kinda meh. Rodrick is, like, not that interesting, and there's not much excitement. It's just Greg being wimpy and dealing with his annoying brother. Maybe some people like it, but I think there are better books out there.

Overall, "Rodrick Rules" is okay, I guess, but it's not a masterpiece or anything. If you're into simple, not-so-exciting stories with some doodles, then maybe give it a try. But, you know, don't expect too much.

Title: Finding Light in Unexpected Places

Optimists Die First

Reviewed by [Zain Mahmoud Khaled Saeed]

Star Rating: ★★★★☆

"Optimists Die First" by Susin Nielsen is a fun journey through life's ups and downs. It combines humour and emotion to create a story that the readers can relate with. With a 4.5-star rating, this novel teaches us to explore the power of optimism in life.

Summary:

The story shows Petula, a teenager struggling with guilt and anxiety after a tragic event. While Petula navigates her emotions, she finds herself in a support group where she finds weird and unexpected friendships. Together, this diverse group learns to face their fears, showing a reminder that even in darkness, there's room for hope and healing.

Character Analysis:

In the middle of the story is Petula, the main character. The author, Nielsen, tells Petula's journey using the PEEL structure. It helps us connect with her fears, cheer for her successes, and see her grow. The support group characters make the story diverse and memorable.

Best Part and Recommendation:

The novel's highlight is Petula's transformation, a journey from despair to self-acceptance. The best part of the book is how Petula changes and learns to accept herself. I loved seeing the real friendships that developed in the support group. The author, Susin Nielsen, does a great job of mixing serious stuff with funny moments, making the story touching and uplifting.

Likes/Dislikes:

The nice thing about the book is how it talks about serious stuff in a calm and relatable way. Nielsen's writing is easy to get into and keeps you interested. But some people might guess what's going to happen, and sometimes it feels like other books we've read before.

In "Optimists Die First," I noticed a few themes. One is the idea of overcoming guilt and learning to forgive oneself. Another theme is the power of friendship and how it can help us heal. The book also explores the importance of taking risks and facing our fears.

Jacob, another character in the book. He's really funny and brings a lot of lightness to the story. I relate to him because I enjoy making people laugh and finding humor in tough situations.

If I were in Petula's shoes, there might be a few things I would have done differently. For instance, I would have tried to open up and communicate my feelings with others a bit earlier. I would also have taken more risks and enjoyed new opportunities, even if they seemed scary at first.
