Setting

This story takes place in an old beauty shop. I know this because it says "Abbey Garner is used to killing time by reading questions from the snarky tabloids in Granny Po's struggling beauty shop."
This story is happening around 2004/2005. I know this because it says "I reached for the last yearbook, class of 1990... Mom's senior pictures... Mom was five months pregnant when this was taken..." That tells me the year because it also says "Not exactly appropriate for a 14 year old.' '15' I reminded her."
The setting is important to the story because it explains why things are the way they are. For example, it tells you why the beauty shop was so outdated, and how it clearly hadn't been updated as times changed.

The antagonist in this story Abbey's family history. Abbey is worried that she is going to end up like her mom; single and barely making enough money to live off of. Because of this, Abbey starts working her butt off so she can save up money, so that she will have that money to fall back on when she is older. If something goes wrong, and she does end up like her mother, she wants to have money saved up that she can use. Since Abbey is working so much, she stops spending time with her family. Her dad tries to do things with her to rebuild their relationship, but Abbey was always too busy working to spend any time with her dad. Abbey started focuding on working instead of spending time with her family.

This book made me think about the importance of family, and how family should come firstbefore anything. In the book it says "I agreed with Dale... because you were my second chance. To do things right, not like with Evelyn. I was thirty-four when my husband died, Evelyn was eighteen. She was married with a baby by that time, and still resented me for not supporting her relationship with Elton. I could have tried harder to make things right between us, but I was too busy trying to save my own rear, opening the parlor, and paying off Ralph's debt. So I wasn't there for her, not when she was a scared new mother, not eighteen years later when she was so depressed after kicking her own daughter out of the house. Maybe if I was... she wouldn't have killed herself." This shows that Granny Po should have put her family first because when her daughter needed her support, and Granny Po did not help her, Granny Po's daughter ended up killing herself.

In this story, it is evident that Abbey is forgiving. I know this because in the story she says "I love you, too, Mom." This shows that Abbey loves her mom regardless of the past. Abbey's mom left her to live with and be raised by her great-grandmother. She told Abbey that she would come back for her when her life settled down, but she never did. But even though her mother lied to her, Abbey still cared about her mother, and still loved her mother. She forgave her for what she did to her.

Here is an example of something that she thinks, that is funny and immature: "I almost choked. Did he say Harry Penney?" She found that name really funny, which shows that she has a sense of humor, and that she is immature.

Sometimes Abbey irritates the people around her. For example, she was irritating Mitch when he was trying to be nice to her on her birthday. I know this because in the book it says "Mitch jerked back like I'd slapped him. His face hardened. 'Man what is your problem Abbey? You don't need my help? Then, fine, I'm out of here. But hey... before I go... happy birthday.' His voice was icy." This shows that Mitch was irritated by the way Abbey was treating him.

In this story it is evident that Abbey is caring. I know this because Abbey had been saving up her money for years. She had saved all the money she had received since she got to Granny Po's. Then, when her mom was struggling and wanted to buy a house so she could live with Abbey again, she didn't have enough money, and she couldn't make it happen. Abbey realized that, so one day when her mom was visiting her, Abbey gave her mom almost all of her money. She did this because she cared about her mom. She didn't want to see her mom struggling anymore, and she wanted her mom to be happy. So she gave her life savings to her mom because she cared.

Beauty Shop For Rent by Laura Bowers is a very good book. It has a good story containing many good messages. It is very believable; many people could find this book relatable to their life. I think this book is great for middle or high school students. The story is very clear, and it is not hard to follow. The author included a lot of details, which helped me feel like I was standing there watching the whole thing take place. I stayed up late many nights reading because once I started reading the book, I couldn't put it down. The author did a great job of making the story interesting by making it unpredictable. There were many parts of the story where I was shocked by what was happening. In the middle of the book there was an unexpected plot twist that leaves the reader wanting to read more. This was a really good book and I would totally recommend it to anyone.

Leader

Granny Po acted as a leader in this story. She wanted to be Abbey's guardian because she wanted a second chance. She was afraid that her daughter had killed herself because she wasn't a good enough mother. She thought that if she had been more supportive of her daughter, then she wouldn't have killed herself. She wanted to be a role model for Abbey because she didn't want Abbey to make the same mistakes that she did as a mother. She wanted Abbey to break the family "tradition" of marrying and having children in high school, then getting a divorce, and struggling to make enough money and raise a child at the same time. Granny Po also lead the Gray Widows when Gena Rented the beauty shop. Granny Po was against many of her ideas, but the rest of the Gray Widows agreed with most of her ideas. Even though they didn't agree with Granny Po, they stuck with her because they didn't want to upset her. They didn't want to make her mad, so they pretended to agree with Granny Po's ideas. They were afraid that if they didn't, they wouldn't be allowed to come back to the shop ever again, and they were afraid Granny Po wouldn't like them any more. I could say Granny Po was a good leader, but she also wasn't a good leader. She was a good leader because people followed her and looked up to her. The Gray Widows followed her because they were too scared to not follow her. But, I could also argue that she wasn't a good leader because they weren't following her because she convinced them to follow her, they only followed her because they felt they had to. Also, Granny Po tried to act as a role model for Abbey, but she lied to Abbey about her father wanting custody of her. If she wanted to be a good role model for Abbey, she should not have lied to her.
