Being a Kindergarten Teacher, one of the most important "Cs" that I use in my classroom is "Communication." Definitely with the students in my class, but also with the parents! We use a class blog to outline what the week ahead looks like, as well as class dojo to post pictures of the student's learning. It is so important to provide clear, concise, and consistent communication.
-Kat

Choices Choices

I think all good instructors try to incorporate the 5-Cs, but the one I find the most intriguing and applicable in my practice is choice. I teach web design courses, and in this subject area there are literally dozens of ways to achieve the same result using different methods and paths. Web and graphic design are riddled by an abundance of choices for each task (vector or raster, dynamic or static, mobile or desktop, wix or weebly), etc. Thus, when students are faced with the task of making a decision of what method or design option to use, they really need to engage in a meta-cognitive process of a) comparing all the different methods available to produce a task and b) find a solid justification or rationale for their choice of implementation versus other options (why). This approach also allows me to present the elements of Design Theory that illustrate that some choices are better than others due to factors such as usability, simplicity and efficiency. So, the element of choice plays a central role in technology courses, because there are sooo many options available, as has been clearly illustrated by the many creative approaches of the group projects during this conference. ~ Raquel

Working with adult helicopter maintenance and aircrews, communication is key to ensure the daily goals are achieved, and the flying program is met. Shift change from day to evening must ensure vital information is passed between teams, and from day to day, to ensure no maintenance activities are missed or not captured administratively. Without constant communication, across all levels of the organization, getting helicopters in the air would be a much greater challenge than it already is!
-Reg

This is a tough one, cause I bet we all wish we were teaching this way all the time. As I critically assess my own practices I can see I need to do more to incorporate all 5 more frequently. For now I think I do the last 3 pretty well. I often have students work together to discover, discuss and explain to each other the things they are learning about in class. The are invited in these pair and share activities to think critically about the things they are reading.
I think tomorrow I'm going to try to do something to present them with more choices, in a meaningful way (more than just choose where you want to sit) - Brian

I think most teachers can identify the importance of all of these. I can certainly find examples of the five C's in my classes. I am finding a paradox in Choice and Consistency (mentioned in communication) in my own practice. In a system where fair is "same" it can be difficult to maintain a perception of fairness or consistency if students are exploring on the basis of what they need (choice), rather than what is mandated.

-Mike

I think 'communication' as a topic in itself, rather than secondary to other topics is very critical as a core skill for life. Over the years I've facilitated a lot of workshops on the basics of 'communication' for health workers, and I've been surprised how little they understood this topic, and how life changing it has been for them to open their eyes to basic concepts in 'communication'. It's a shame that they have to wait until they are adults to be exposed to these ideas, it should be a significant theme throughout our education, which I believe would make for a more understanding, empathetic and 'caring' world. Che
