Barbie Doll Lesson Reflection

During my first LLA class in the second week, we’ve made an analysis on a poem entitled, Barbie Doll. “ This poem tells a story about a girl that worked so hard to make herself look pretty” that thought brushed into my mind when I first read the poem. However, after going through the discussions in the LLA class, I began to realize that this poem was actually holding bigger messages than what I’ve thought it had in the first place.

“ Society is our biggest problem”, I think that is the best remark I should give after reading this poem. Why am I saying this? Feeling insecure, having low self-confidence, over-analyzing things; these are the problems that girls nowadays had to deal with because of all the treatments the society had been giving us. And because of this, I would boldly claim that our society is being too judgemental and overly concerning about physical appearances and external beauty instead of focusing towards the positive qualities that someone has.

. Girls, we were raised with girlie stuff since we were small. Clear examples would be make up stuff like lipstick, miniature cooking toys and Barbie dolls. Smooth and fair skin, sexy lips, slim waist, wavy-blonde and long hair; these are the characteristics that came into my mind whenever we talk about Barbie dolls. Because of this, girls had been living with wrong perceptions that we should grow up to be as beautiful as a Barbie doll. However, I think that this is something that would be really hard to achieve. Why? Because we are not perfect. However, just like what the writer had been trying to emphasize in this poem; the society did not understand this! They are too busy analyzing and criticizing. Because of this, we are actually living in an environment where it is really hard to be ourselves because people are busy directing our life and telling us what to do and how to behave.

I am very sure that the main question that will be posted by readers, especially girls after reading this poem is, “ Why can’t we be ourselves?”. The society is pushing girls really hard that girls nowadays have to live as someone else. Girls are over-dieting and over-exercising to make themselves look good enough to be accepted by the society despite the fact that they are actually feeling tired living in this kind of bad life cycle. And this is what the line “Her good nature wore out, like a fan belt” ( line 4&5, stanza 3) is trying to tell us.

What I learned through this lesson was, we have to live our life the way how we want to live because life is ours. Yes, I do believe that beauty and physical appearance are important. However it should not be something that will stop us from being who we actually are. It is true that we should not blame the society blindly as this problem arise because of too. This is why, I think that we should appreciate ourselves even more and stop comparing ourselves with someone who is better than us because everyone has their own specialty. Those who mistrust their own abilities are being too wicked to themselves, discouraging themselves from doing what they should have been excelling in and this is why we should always be grateful to be born as who we are today.

Answer for Independence Day Pop Quiz

Before independence, the Indonesians' focus was on the liberty of Indonesia. However, after independence had been achieved, the people's focus had shifted into the things that will develop and enhance their way of living. This is because, before independence, the people realized that their economy was being monopolised by the colonialist which was the Dutch and this was why, they worked so hard and had the will to resign their life to get their rights back. After independence, the economy was all theirs. However, it was unfortunate for them because their established government could not rule the country properly that the people had to suffer from poverty. Because of this, the people's focus after independence was basically about the things that will help them to earn a living. In fact, due to modernization that caused new things like radios and cameras to appear, the people also had forgotten about what matters the most which was to ensure that their country achieved REAL independence; economically and politically.

Lesson Reflection ( Week 3)

In today class, we had analyzed a song entitled, Cat’s In The Cradle, sang by Harry Chapin. However, in the beginning of the lesson, we were shown a video regarding the sacrifices that all fathers would have done for the sake of their children’s happiness. Through that video, I began to realize that parents are the people who tend to live in lies. They literally lie about everything; they sacrificed their sleep to take care of their sick children even though there are due dates to catch up with at work, they smile although they are tired, they laugh even though there are invisible pain that left a scar deep inside their heart. Nobody can ever live in lies throughout their life, but parents can. Although they are tired because all of the hardships they have to go through just to raise us, however, it is our happiness that gives them the courage to keep moving through this harsh journey. The video that were shown was really inspirational because it gave me the consciousness to take a few seconds to reflect all my actions towards my parents because it is undeniable that all of their sacrifices are priceless and should be appreciated even more. In fact, many of us; me and my classmates, shed into tears when the video was played.

Next, we began to listen to the song and analyze the literal meaning of the song. The song gave a very massive impact on me because it reflects the actual problem that is really happening in our society nowadays. Parents are busy with their work and their children are left out and ignored. It is true that we cannot blindly put all the blames on the parents because they have pure intentions which is to provide happiness and luxury for their children. However, it is also important for them too, to be aware of the basic things that their children crave from them. Children need affections from their parents, however there are parents who could not realize this problem because they are too busy chasing their dreams.

Children observe and children do. This is why parents should act and behave very well in front of their children. In fact, as I analyze the song, I realize that at the end, the son behave and become exactly the same as his father. It happens not because of revenge the son has towards his father. However, this happens because this is how the son had been raised all this while; without getting attention from his father. The father could not blame his son and in fact, he did not regret at all because he realizes it himself, that everything that happens now is caused by him.

Reflection of Dulce Et Decorum Est

Dulce Et Decorum Est is a poem written by Wilfred Owen. When I read this poem, I begin to realize the reason why Owen is acknowledged as one of the great poets. As I analyze every single words written by him, I start to understand gradually the messages that he is trying to deliver to his readers. The only remark I can ever give to this poem is that it conveys dark feelings and brings bitterness to whoever that reads it. For example, Owen often uses imagery in this poem so that the readers can imagine how bad and terrible the condition of the soldiers during the war. Owen is actually trying to tell the readers especially the youths that we should never get ourselves involved in war because war brings nothing but destruction. Yes, it is true that we should look into this issue through different perspectives because there are several parties that think war is relevant especially when we talk about the condition of feeling threatened when we are attacked by our enemies; this is actually stated by Rahman during our Independence Day lesson. When we had our discussion in class, Rahman clearly stated that war is something that should not be accepted at all because all it ever gives are destructions and death. However, as the Independence Day lesson continued, every one of us began to realize that sometimes, war could not be avoided. Here’s an analogy, just imagine that our brother or sister pinches us for no reason, would we just stay quiet and do nothing or pinch her back? I would pinch her back, if it was me. However, in this context, Owen strongly opposes the action of getting involved in war because he was there, fighting with his fellow soldiers, witnessing all the death of his friends by himself. He knows all the pain that soldiers have to bear with because he has the experience of being in that kind of situations. He uses irony when he wrote Dulce et Decorum est pro patria mori in the last stanza because he realizes that the society especially youths are being fed with the same old lie that it is honorable to die for our country despite the fact that the soldiers are actually suffering with disgusting pain and eventually die, gaining nothing; not to mention victory. This is the reason why Owen opposes the idea of youth going to war because youths are the assets of our country. They are the one who will contribute towards the country’s development and this is why youths should not join war because our country will definitely lose this precious assets. Yes, it is undeniable that war could not be avoided at some cases but we all know that war is dreadful and terrible. This is why I think that it is important for me to constantly be grateful to the fighters that had resigned their entire life to protect our country because if it was not because of them, I would not be here today, enjoying the freedom that lay ahead of me.

Tell Tale Heart Reflection

Tell tale heart- I guess I will read another typical love story; that was the first remark I gave when Madam Dee introduced this short story during our first LL class. It was quite shocking to find out that this short story was actually about a murder committed by someone who has a mental illness and this obviously contradicted to my first impression. I can boldly claim that the writer, Edgar Allan Poe had done a very good job in creating a great story line in this short story because I have learnt a lot from it. Mental illness is a serious problem and it should be treated as fast as we could; Madam Diana’s statement still lingers in my mind until now and in fact, I believe that all of us agree with her. However, in our society, I doubt if this could be applied effectively because just like all of us know, the people in our society have negative impressions on the idea of seeking for a psychology’s help. They are too cautious about what other people might think about them especially when they go through a psychology treatment. This should not happen especially when it involves children with mental illness. Parents should ignore about whatever the society would say about their family because the children’s well-being is much more important than that. They are too terrified that people would claim their children as crazy and insane. However, what’s more important here is that their children receive proper treatment because it would be them who will grow up and become a part of the society. I am sure that parents do not want their children to grow up into someone that has mental illness like a psychopath and eventually end up being a killer. Parents should care more about their children’s future instead of thinking about the society that is undeniably sick as well. I enjoyed my tell tale heart lesson especially during the presentation session. I would really like to give Madam Diana a big round of applause for giving us good assignments that really suit our characters. I had so much fun because everyone in class contributed especially during Syakir’s presentation.

Syukri is my group leader. My comments on him would be:
Positive comments:
- He has a great command in English so he can help the members who could not speak or voice out their points and ideas during the discussion.
- He was a great leader especially when he helped Yusman and Lee when these two members struggled when they were being asked question by Madam Diana.
- He is very good at generating creative, new ideas. All the ideas used in our short film were mostly contributed by Syukri.
- He knows what he should do….

Negative Comments:
- He knows what he should do only after he understands what he has to do. I am truly sorry for saying this, but he takes a very longgggg time to process or digest something and if I don’t explain it to him, He would not know what he is being assigned with
- if this guy is stranded on an deserted island all alone by himself, I don’t think he would survive… He did not even read the tell tale heart text before going through the discussion. So for improvement, I hope that Madam Diana will advise him to read first before he enters the class.

I am an adrenaline junkie so, I prefer doing lots of adventurous activities

What makes me happy: I love to see people smiling especially my friends. That’s why people would claim me as the lamest joker because it is me who would usually make stupid and lame jokes because looking at people laughing and cracking a big, cheerful smile really makes me happy

However….. I hate it when people make fun of me or say bad things about me. There was one time when I told Syukri that I want a divorce in Biology’s Telegram Group ( this is about the husband and wife jokes) and Syukri said he was really sad. And surprisingly, someone named Firdaus Al Faraby suddenly said to Syukri that “ It’s okay Syuk. Don’t be sad. Yana is not even worth it”. Yeah, maybe he was joking but I got really sad especially when a guy said that I AM NOT WORTH IT.
It’s okay, it happened a long time ago. Firdaus had apologized when I told him that I don’t like the idea of getting bad remark even though it was meant to be a joke.

I don’t have any specific favourite songs because I enjoy listening to everything, including Tamil songs. As for movies… Yeah, I am a childish girl so I would prefer movies from marvel or DC

I could still remember how its glowing-beryl green eyes stared at me when I patted while brushing its fur and tails.

Love in a headscarf lesson reflection on clash between culture and religion

Love in a headscarf is a really good story because it does not only focus on love and romance but it actually highlights about the problems and issues that we have within our society whenever we talk about the process of looking for the most perfect spouse or life partner. Sometimes, there would be one point when the society misunderstand the guidance given by our religion with the norm or cultures that they had been practicing during their entire life. In fact, the same issues had been emphasized in this short story. This can be seen in the beginning of the story when Shelina first introduced about samosas that had been traditionally became the trademark and guidance in choosing a good wife. The point here is that, the people in Shelina’s society is blindly using food to determine whether a girl is perfect enough to be their son’s wife or not. I could not agree with this method because it obviously neglects the other positive qualities that a girl has. In fact, in religion itself, it has not been stated that the wife should be the one staying in the kitchen, cooking and serving the husband. A wife is someone that gives love and affection towards her husband and should not be treated like a maid, forced to cook or clean the house. Husbands should always realize the fact that they have a huge responsibility of making their wife feel comfortable living beside them; hiring a maid for their wife could be one of the best things they could do for their wife. However, the society had mistakenly thought that cooking and cleaning the house as obligations for the wives despite realizing that this actually gives massive pressure towards girls.

Another contradiction that I have detected is regarding the statement made about the relationship between the wife and mother-in-law. I could not tolerate the fact that the society especially mother-in-laws are expecting their sons’ wives to treat them as their own mother. To make things worse, they also hope that their daughter-in-law can live in the same house as theirs, serving their family like how they should treat their husband. They also think that when a girl is married to their son, the daughter-in-law is automatically married to his family as well. The term ‘married to his family’ here solely means that the girl should accept the people that used to be total strangers to her, live in the same house as them, cook for them and keep pretending that she is happy and can adapt to the new situation despite the fact that she feels uncomfortable being forced to live like that. Moreover, there are certain mother-in-laws that negatively think that their son is pampering their wife too much by buying a new house for their wife. However, I personally think that it is the best action because the term ‘marriage’ itself shows that their son has a new journey to begin with their wife. It is undeniable that their son still holds a big responsibility to take care of them but mother-in-laws should also be understanding enough that their son also has their own wife to take care of. In fact, I strongly believe that toleration is what makes someone happy throughout their life because by being tolerable, someone would not be bother to share love and affections with other people.

The next clash between culture and religion happened when it is fixed that one of the criterias a husband should have is that he must be graduated from a university. Yes, it is undeniable that a husband should be financially stable and educated enough in order for him to have the ability to support his family and his wife. In fact, in religion itself, we are advised to choose a husband based on their faith, deen and ability to support us. However, the society should not put a pressure on husbands by having specific requirements like that because not everyone has the chance to further their studies up to that level. I realise that this happen because the society cares too much about what other people might think about their son-in-law. I can give a clear and simple example; just look at what happened in a classic film entitled Ibu Mertuaku, played by P. Ramlee. This story revolves around a tragic love affair between a poor musician and a daughter of a very wealthy family. This couple could not continue loving each other as the mother-in-law forbid their relationship just because her son-in-law worked as a musician. What i want to emphasize here is that we should not blindly focus on someone's education level or occupation in choosing a husband because the 'abality to support a wife' does not solely focus on their amount of salary but it also looks into someone's willingness to work harder for their wife. This is why i keep holding onto this saying, 'the present might not be the future, it depends on your attitudes towards the present'. If someone works very hard because they know that they have a huge responsibility to take care of their wife, i believe that they can have a nice and pleasant journey together.

Reading Log of It Had To Be Murder

When I read the short story, entitled It Had To be Murder, it was funny to find out that I quickly jumped into the next four pages instead of starting with the first one. That was one of the flaws that I have detected from this short story; it had too many descriptions and you can barely find any dialogue in the first few pages of the story. I can say that I am an avid reader but my reading choice would be specifically focused on books that have dialogues because dialogues make me feel attached to the character itself. Unfortunately, in this short story, there were so many words and descriptions packed in one page and it made me feel like I am looking at a sardine can.

I know that it is inappropriate for me to mention about the flaw first as it gives bad impression on this story to whoever that reads this reading log but let’s keep the best as the last. There were several questions that I had in mind as I continued reading this story. In fact, I can list every single question that went through my mind. The questions are:

1. Who is Jeffri and what actually happened to him until he hurt his own leg?
2. What will he do after he had recovered and what kind of job that he had?
3. Was he an inspector because I could see that he had a very good connection with Boyne who wa police investigator?
4. Will he get caught for peeping and violating his neighbors’ privacy in the end and could he defend and free himself from that accusation?
5. Was there really a murder or was it just an imagination because he thought too much while he was trapped in his own room, unable to move freely because of his leg? In fact, there was one moment when I accused Jeff to be the murder because I thought that he was a psychopath who would imagine that the person he killed was murdered by other people and he would put the blame on innocent people because he could not even remember that he was the one that killed the victim.
p/s: Maybe this happened because I enjoyed Tell Tale Heart so much

Besides that, i would also like to give a round big of applause to Cornell Woolrich because as a writer, he had done an amazing job in creating great suspense and tension in this story. I remembered the moment when my own fear enveloped my entire soul as i read through the part where the killer came into Jeffri's house and nearly had the success to kill him. Apart from that, besides focusing too much in creating tension, Woolrich also managed to create variation in his way of writing when he creatively added another character which is Sam, who I found as someone that is very misterious yet funny. The way he obeyed to Jefrri's order but sometimes had the courage to secretely mutter to badmouth him gave the readers a few seconds to breathe and relax instead of focusing too much on the serious part of the story.
Hence, i could say that It Had To Be Murder is quite an interesting story because it challenges my mind as it induce myself to get involved in the story by figuring out whether was there really a murder or was it just a blind accusation made by Jeff because he felt too bored, traped in the same place because of his injured leg
