They also believed that if they were apart of the union that their rights should be respected. Although his plan failed and only increased the existing tensions between the Northerners and Southerners. The north and south were not ready to resort to violence as there had already been much of that, and had created many compromises to avoid so, although some had already been broken. After the Kansas-Nebraska Act passed in 1854 representatives of both sides fled into Kansas as it was now up to the citizens of the state to decide if it was slave state or not. This overturned the Missouri Compromise that declared Kansas as a free state. As people flooded into the state it was a fight for obtaining the favorable territorial legislature. Things took a turn and ended up with both opposing legislatures trying to govern Kansas. Pro-slavery advocates acted in violence and attacked an anti-slavery community. Though these people weren't going to sit back and watch as they were attacked. They took matters into their own hands and had just as much blood on their hands as their attackers. He was unsuccessful as the supreme court ruled that if you were an enslaved person and you lived in a free state you were not entitled to your freedom. With this being said they did not see Dred as a person therefore he was not a citizen. They also said that Congress couldn't prohibit slavery from the territories which contradicted the the Missouri Compromise. Now people in the north were mad because they had decided not to allow enslaved people in their territories and the Dred Scott decision allowed enslaved people to be brought into their states.
