3.)The Alien and Sedition Acts

What were the Alien and Sedition Acts?
In response to the foreign threats from France and the Democratic party, who seemingly would allow for foreign influence, forced John Adams to sign a set of 4 laws weakening the rights of United states citizens. These included:

Raising residency requirements for citizenship from 5 to 14 years.

President has the power to deport "aliens," or in other words, foreigners.

Permitted their imprisonment and arrest during wartime.

Made it a crime for Americans to say or print anything against the government.

Why?

Adams feared French and foreign influence would make it's way into the United States, since they were at war.

In order to suppress Democratic Republican Party, as the Federalists viewed them as a threat to the nation, because of their ideals being against the Federalist Party, who were "keeping the nation in one piece."

Cause and Effect

State legislatures pass resolutions declaring these Federal Laws invalid, a bold opposition to the federal government. The importance of state rights in these situations, establish justified reasons towards the secession of the southern states during the civil war.

Federalists viewed their ideals as "a survival to the republic." (Through the censorship of spoken and printed ideas against the government, the idea of parties would dissolve, effectively keeping the union united. Yet the backlash of these ideals from the northern states, started to create even more disunion.)
