Guys, let's discus some issues raised in this episode in class:

1. Gwen wants to change her life: leave service and do what she really wants to do in her life. She saved up some money and bought a typewriter. It was "kept private, not secret" in her room until Miss O'Brien happened to find and unveil it. She's also taken a postal course in shorthand (метод стенографии).
What is your opinion of trying to find you own way in life (in terms of profession) no matter what may happen to you now?

2. "Good riddance!.. We all carry scars inside or outside. You are no different to the rest of us", said Mrs. Hughes.
What was the point Mrs. Hughes was trying to make? Do you agree with Mrs. Hughes?

3. A bit personal, but anyway: "I am not a vain man, I do not consider myself a very interesting person. But I feel it's important that my future wife should think me so. A woman who finds me boring could never love me. And I believe, marriage should be based on love", this is what Mr. Napier said to Lady Grantham.
Don't you think he is hypocritical saying this, as he only cares about money Mary owns?

1. I was very happy for Gwen and I absolutely approve her udertaking. It was an incredebly brave step in that ages decide to change the life despite <del>of</del> anything. If you want to change your life and find your own way you absolutely shouldn't be afraid of such steps and should be prepared to face a lot of difficulties. When you stop trying to improve your life and start to content you've got you stop growing like a person or specialist(in terms of profession).
2. It was a very smart move Mrs.Hughes has made. She told Bates that all of them have scars and, I think, by this she was trying to show him that there is nothing to be ashamed or to be afraid of, and he is already a part of their society. I guess, in the first place, she was trying to reconcile Bates with himself and prevent all the future attemts to change himself to be corresponding.
3.Oh no, I don't think so. Also, I'm not very sure, he cared only about the Mary's money. Of cource, it was a tactical move to marry Mary, but it was a different age... A man had to find a good match for himself. However, from this point of view, his thoughts were correct, when he said that he wanted to be in love with his future wife, might be after some time.

1) Trying to find your own way of life might be risky, it takes a lot of courage to change your life and it might be a bad idea overall, but sometimes it is necessary. If a person is lacking something is a common sense that he will want to obtain it, be it freedom, money or just anything. And for better or worse, this why we are where we are right now.

2) Basically, she implied that nobody is perfect and everyone does their best to live with their imperfections. I cant say if I agree or disagree with her, I think we should still aim to fix these “scars”. Bates actually tried to change, but did not realize it was giving him even more scars, literally.

3) I don’t think the word “hypocrisy” is applicable here. He is probably having his own interests in mind, but the phrase itself is not hypocritical at all. Actually, it makes everything easier for every party involved.

The 4th episode of the series does not contain lots of really interesting events like it was in the previous episode. However, in general, the 4th episode is quite OK.

There are a few moments in the episode I would like to point out:

- Mr Carson hired a new footman.
The female part is quite pleased by his handsome appearance, however, Alfred and Ms O'Brien aren't.
- Lady Edith tried herself like a journalist.
She wrote some article regarding the woman's rights and turned out the article has been published in the morning paper. Looks like she found herself.
- Matthew (Mr. Crawley) was observing some "Downton management" book. This task was given to Matthew by Robert.
I'm not quite sure what was the task exactly, but after Matthew's analysis he found out that the Downton has been mal-managed for a long time.
He decided to speak to Violet Crawley pertaining the issue, but she recommended (that) he avoid the situation and try to make all further deals in a correct way (as he thinks it's right);
- Tom Branson and his wife Sybil left Ireland because Tom has been accused of doing some antigovernment activity.
Both of them have been pursued by the police but they managed to escape.
The Crawley's family are / is not in favour of what Mr Tom did, however, Robert agreed to regulate Tom's issue with the Irish police for the sake of his daughter and his upcoming grandchild. Nevertheless, there is one term that Tom should accept, he can never cross the Ireland border.
As I could see, Mr Tom is a pretty obstinate person, I would even say revolutionary. Notwithstanding the fact his wife is expecting a child, he's planning to leave Downton and continue his revolutionary activity. Of course, he did not say that, but I guess he'll do it.
- John Bates resolved the issue with his cellmate.
Some man helped Mr Bates to figure out the whole issue which was related to him.
Right after he set up his cellmate, he received a plethora of Anna's messages. Anna received Bate's messages as well.
- Isobel Crawley and Mrs Hughes were busy with resolving Ethel's problem.
Ethel decided to give her son to his grandparents. The grandparents agreed to give her some money to live, however, she refused the offer because she wishes her son lives in abundance and go to some good school and further to university.
The main thing she refused those people's money is that amount of money could not give her son the things she wishes to him.
She wants to give him a better life.
- Daisy was trying to tell Alfred about her feelings to him, however, she's been interrupted by Ms Patmore introducing Ivy as a new cook assistant.

The 5th episode of the series is quite dramatic because of Sybil's bad story line. Here a few key moments of the episode:

- Lady Edith had been offered a job as a journalist in a morning newspaper after her success with a previous article regarding the women's rights.
She can write her own column and publish any articles she wants.
It looks very strange that her family do not approve her doings, only Matthew does. Probably it's because of the 20th century strict rules.
- Matthew is interested in restoring some family's estate.
He found out that there is some dilapidated land he owns now (after he got a new role as a co-owner) which can be restored. Some time ago it was farmer's place, but due to improper funding the place had been ruined.
Matthew was trying to hide his plans regarding the estate from Richard for some unknown reason. Probably because Richard does not see the potential of the places that he owns.
- John Bates and Anna puzzled out some really useful facts regarding the Bate's investigation.
Anna had a meeting with John's advocate and they need to persuade some woman to testify to obtain the truth. However, "that" woman could be against of doing it because she does not like Mr Bates.
This story line is not clear for me because I started watching this TV series a short time ago. That's why I can't give more details on this.
- Isobel Crawley decided to give Ethel a job in her house.
Isobel wants to give Ethel a better life by giving her a job. However, she had to manage the servant's conflict between Ethel and her current housekeeper: she decided to fire her current housekeep for the sake of Ethel.
She cares of Ethel very much, it's like she's her mother. It's really sweet.
Ethel is trying to adapt to her new job but she is still making some mistakes. However, Ms Crawley believes in her.
- Daisy is still angry with Ivy because Ivy likes Alfred.
Daisy received some advice from Ms Pathmore to be friendlier and more polite with Ivy if she wants to look better in Alfred's eyes.
There is one more interesting thing is that new footman likes Ivy as well.
