         <title>Mary Jackson</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Mary Jackson, was a brilliant mathematician and aerospace engineer. She became NASA's first Black female engineer. Jackson was born in 1921 in Hampton, Virginia and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in mathematics and physician science from the Hampton Institute in 1942. </div><div>She started her career as a math teacher at a Black school in Maryland, and after a handful of career changes, started working under Dorothy Vaughan at the segregated West Area Computing section, along with Vaughan and Johnson. </div><div>After two years working as a "computer," Jackson was offered a job working in a 60,000 horsepower wind tunnel called the Supersonic Pressure Tunnel. After attending a training program, with special permission to attend classes with White students, she was promoted from mathematician to engineer, becoming NASA's first black female engineer in 1958. She then spent nearly 20 years authoring/co-authoring around a dozen research papers, mostly about airflow around airplanes.</div><div>Mary Jackson also loved helping others. In the 1970s, she worked with students at Hampton's King Street Community center to build a wind tunnel and use it for experiments. She wanted to get the student interested in science. She wanted to let them know that there is a lot of career opportunities in science if they ever wanted to become a scientist when they grow up. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Jocelyn Bell</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Jocelyn Bell attended the University of Glasgow, where she received a bachelor's degree (1965) in physics. She proceeded to the University of Cambridge, where she was awarded a doctorate (1969) in radio astronomy. She is influential because she discovered radio pulsars which was also known has the greatest astronomical discovery in the 20th century. Her Ph.D. supervisor was later awarded the Nobel prize. Jocelyn was excluded from the prize. We are still discovering more radio pulsars today. In fact we recently discovered the slowest radio pulsar the PSR J0250+5854.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Sandra Faber is an astrophysicist who specializes in evolution of galaxies. In the 80s, she worked with other scientists and published a series of articles about dark matter. It was about cold matter and how it cannot be composed of "fast moving neutrinos". She became the first woman on the faculty at the University of California. She was also involved with Keck telescopes, which then and are still the most powerful optical instruments. In 2013 she accepted the National Medal of Science from Barack Obama. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Rebecca Cole is influential in Stem because she graduated medial school and helped a bunch of people while raising 5 kids. She also helped people with hygiene and knew that a lack of it was the cause of a high death rate.  Some struggles this person faced was she was the 2nd women to be a doctor so I'm sure a lot of people didn't support her because she was a women. Her studies and work continue today because a lot of women doctors look up to her and want to be just like her. Her work also continued because doctors can use her work to help people with their hygiene and stay healthy.  <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This woman Katharine Burr Blodgett is influential in the world of STEM. For example she was the first female scientist hired at the General Electric research lab. She also worked on wartime technology improving the effectiveness of smoke screens. She helped with meteorological sciences by developing a device to measure humidity.  She never really got the recognition she deserved with helping so much for the science world. She didn't get this recognition solely because she was a woman. She was also the creator of glass. Non-reflective glass like you see in windows and doors. Glass like this is still used very much in stores buildings houses and anywhere you go you will see glass. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>She began astronaut training in 1984 and in 1992 she was designated payload specialist for the first International Microgravity Laboratory Mission.  <br>After her astronaut career, Bondar led an international team of researchers at  NASA for more than a decade, examining data obtained from astronauts on space missions to better understand the mechanisms underlying the body's ability to recover from exposure to space.  Bondar's research in space recovery considered the linkage to Parkinson's disease in addition to other neurological effects.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Wu Chien-Shiung was a Chinese-American physicist. She worked on the Manhattan Project where she developed she process of separating uranium metal into U-235 and U-238 isotopes by gaseous diffusion. In 1957  two of her colleagues won a noble prize with the help of Wu and took all the credit. People still use a lot of her techniques and work today.   </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Rachel Carson was a Marine Biologist and environmentalist. She also writes books about environment pollution, and the history of the sea. Her book "Silent Spring." became one of the most influential  books in the modern environmental movement. So she was a writer and a scientist. The challenges that Rachel Carson faced was the opponents of "silent Spring" They accused her of being radical, disloyal, unscientific, and hysterical. Based on her gender she was still lower than any man in her situation. So some people thought less of her because of her gender. Her work continues today because she is  the woman who challenged the notion that humans could obtain mastery over nature by chemicals, bombs and space travel than for her studies of ocean life. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>March 1882- April 1935<br>Emmy Noether was a German mathematician who made many contributions to algebra. She discovered Noerther's Theorem which is needed for physics. She developed theories of rings, fields, and Algebra's.  She completed her doctorate  in 1907 and worked  for seven years (without pay). She moved to the United States in 1933 where she worked a Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. In 1935 she underwent surgery for an Ovarian Cyst and died 4 days later due from complications.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Jocelyn Bell Burnell</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Jocelyn Burnell was a British astronomer who discovered the cosmic sources of strange radio pulses.Also known as pulsars. Jocelyn attended the University of Glasglow, where she studied and received a bachelors degree in physics. She then went to continue her work at the University of Cambridge,  where she got her doctorate in radio astronomy. Continuing her studies she helped in the construction of a large radio telescope. While monitoring the readings of the telescope she found a series of pulses named LGM. After looking at the patterns of the pulses more with better equipment they found more regular pulses and concluded that it was coming from rapidly spinning neutron stars. Jocelyn is similar to Mary Jackson in a way because they were women that were working in the same field as men and they worked in the same field as each other. They are both authors who still inspire other students to this day.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Elizabeth Blackwell was a British physician. She was influential in STEM because she was the first woman to receive a medical degree in the U.S. (1849). She is known as the first woman doctor as of modern times. Elizabeth was also the first woman on the Medical Register of the General Medical Council. <br>A tough thing she had to face was going blind while treating a wound on an infant. She had also faced discrimination because of her gender.<br>Elizabeth's work still goes on because she had supported woman that wanted to have medical education.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Ellen Ochoa is a American astronaut and administrator who is the first Hispanic women to travel to space (1993). Ochoa has flown in space four times, logging nearly 1,000 hours in orbit. Ochoa studied electrical engineering at Stanford University and earned her mastery degree (1981) and  a doctorate (1985). She worked as a research engineer at Sandia National Laboratories  and at the Ames Research Center at NASA. In 1990 Ochoa was selected by NASA to participate in its astronaut program. Ellen then became the first Hispanic women to complete the training in 1991. In April 1993 she served as mission specialist aboard the STS-56 mission of the space shuttle discovery, becoming the first Latina to be launched into space. During this mission Ochoa other specialists performed various experiments collectively called ATLAS-2, that studied the Sun and its interaction with Earth's atmosphere, the crew also released a satellite that studied the solar wind called, SPARTAN. In 2007 Ochoa became deputy director of the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas,and six years later was promoted the director. In 2018 Ochoa retired to become vice chair of National Science Board (NSB). In 2020 Ellen Ochoa became NSB chair.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Marie is a scientist and she was well known for her work about radioactivity. She had to deal with a lot of sexism like she got denied from french academy of sciences since she was a women. Even though she wasn't able to get into this school she never gave up she kept trying even though she was a female with not many opportunities. Curie is the one who helped people know what radioactivity is and she discovered 2 new elements.  She was also the first women to get a noble peace prize and the only person in history to get a noble peace prize in two separate sciences.  </div>]]></description>

She was also a United States Navy rear admiral, helped develop one of the first high-level programming languages -- and invented the first compiler, a program that translates programming code to machine language<br> but she also went through adversity because she was a women in the military trying to do good and the men did not like that <br>so without her invention we may not be able to understand or read code the way we do today </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Caroline Lucretia Herschel was a German astronomer, whose most significant contributions to astronomy were the discoveries of several comets, including the periodic comet 35P/Herschel–Rigollet, which bears her name. Caroline faced many obstacles throughout her journey in astronomy due to her gender, and these were mostly in the form of a lack of familial encouragement, a lack of tools and resources others in the field had access to, and the way she was treated by “experts” in the field. Caroline Herschel was the first woman to discover a comet, the first woman officially recognized in a scientific position, and the first woman to receive honorary membership into Britain's prestigious Royal Society, Caroline Herschel made a significant contribution to the field of astronomy.</div>]]></description>
