Grace Marks (who was in love with Thomas), and James Mcdermott murdered the two and tried to flee to the United States but was caught at the Lewiston Hotel. Mcdermott was hanged but Grace was given time in a penitentiary to repent as she claimed she was forced to participate in the murders. During her time in the penitentiary so far Grace talks about the outside speculation of herself and how people did not really care if she killed anyone, their main concern is if she was a paramour. Grace has become unaware of what happened the day of the killings, and whether or not she is innocent or just a victim of false accusations. She is seemingly suffering from trauma and is deeply afraid of doctors. She is soon enough sent to an asylum where she is hopefully going to gain her memory back. However, there has been a split among the people of whether or not they believe she did it or not. Their downfall of their friendship is because of Nancy having the idea that Grace is "two faced" and secretly envies Grace. Graces fifteen month stay at the asylum came to an end only a few weeks before Dr. Workman was appointed to his job, and she was sent to the Kingston penitentiary. Dr. Workman also give Simon some advice for his private asylum, which he plans to open one day. In the second letter is to Simon from his sick mother. Mrs. Jordan sighs about her sons lone of work,  ̈No one in the Family has ever concerned herself with Lunatics before. ̈ She also makes it clear that she would prefer Simon to marry Faith Cartwright. In the third letter Simon writes a letter to his friend Dr. Edward Murchie. Simon reveals that he is working on behalf of Reverend Verringer, who was referred to him by Dr. Binswanger. He asks her series of questions that will hopefully help uncover the truth of the murders. He does this by first staring with showing her a potato and tries to make analogies with it in hopes to get an answer, but ultimately with no avail. It's in this specific meeting between the two Grace seemingly avoids questions asked by Dr.Jordan even if knowing the true answer. "I can't remember, Sir. I can't remember what I dreamt last night. It was something confusing," this was what Grace said only a sentence after she explained in her head what she really dreamt of. She continues to do this for the rest of the conversation, avoiding questions and giving the doctor vague answers that won't help him. Their sessions haven’t really been occurring because other things have been happening. Simon has went on a trip to the Kinnear residence to try and retrace Grace’s past, he’s even went to the place where Mary Whitney was buried to confirm Grace’s story as he’s not sure whether or not she is truthful about her past. Also at the house of the Governor they threw a gathering where most of the Doctors interested in Grace’s case met up and discussed, during that it was revealed that Dr. Jerome Dupont is actually Grace’s old friend Jeremiah the Peddler. He’s going to be performing hypnotization on Grace so they can try to find out what memories grace is suppressing. During that hypnotization something shocking happens and that’s the scene i’m going to use. In the scene Simon tells Dr.Dupont to ask Grace while hypnotized if she’s ever had relations with James Mcdermott, then something else awakes inside of her and she continues to say that she killed Nancy with her kerchief but she’s not Grace, she only borrowed her clothing for a time and Grace knows nothing about it. The song I’m going to use for this scene is called Mount Everest by Labrinth, it is a song in which the narrator possesses godlike confidence and is boasting about it, he deems himself as being “on top of the world” and having no competition in his standing. Grace then mentions to him that she has been working on a quilt for one of the Governors daughter. Grace responds shyly with many ideas when he asks what pattern she would use on a quilt she would make for herself. She admits that she already knows what kind of quilt she ́d make-a Tree of Paradise-but that expressing what you really want out loud brings bad luck and possibly punishment. She said, This is what happened to Mary Whitney. ̈ Jordan tries poorly to get Grace to talk about what else might be found underneath than potatoes. He shifts sides and asks about Graces dreams. She remembers a dream in which she was at Mr. Kinnear ́s house and a vendor tried to sell her a blood soaked hand. In her dream she was concerned about the women who was looking for the missing hand as well as the blood getting on the spotless floor. Grace on the other hand tells Jordan she doesn't remember that she dreamed since she prefers to keep her fantasies secret. The song I would choose for this is You've got a friend in me by Randy Newman. Strangely enough, they ask her questions about the day the murder occurred and it seems someone else begins talking instead of her saying that it is Mary Whitney. For this particular scene the song I would choose is Telephones- Vacations. In the song it is about a person missing someone and how they can't live without them and I think it closely ties with how Grace can't live without Mary. Hence the lyrics "I wish I could live without you but you're a part of me, Wherever I go you'll always be next to me". There are chapters in the book shows the interactions between Dr. Jordan and family and friends in the form of letters. This writing style seems to be an ongoing way for Atwood to further flesh out characters such as Dr. Jordan. I also read how Atwood also gives more background to Grace and how she lived and the boat ride to travel for better job opportunities. If I were a director for an Alias Grace movie I would choose a scene from Grace's experience in the boat and the unfortunate passing of her mother during the voyage. This scene really shocked me when I first read it and I think it would have the same effect on audiences, when directing this scene the song I would choose would be Let Her Go by Passenger. I think some of the lyrics in the song such as "You see her when you close your eyes Maybe one day you'll understand why Everything you touch surely dies." In a dark way, this lyric embodies what Grace felt, she tried everything she could to save her mother from the fever she caught during the voyage but it failed.
