I wanted to clarify the difference between Bilingual and ESL programs. I think this visual does a good job summarizing the differences. In an ESL classroom, students are all taught by a teacher who speaks only in English and is not required to speak in the native language of any students. Non-English speakers are taken out of their regular classroom for a period of time to learn English. In a bilingual classroom, the students in the class speak the same language. The teacher also speaks that language. Usually, the teacher instructs in both English and the native language, eventually switching over to only English. The class is geared more towards having the students eventually speak both languages fluently and hold on to their culture.

In this article, Robert Nagel examines two landmark Supreme Court cases that deal with student diversity and the interests of the American public when it comes to groups selecting for diversity. I found his conclusions and insights to be very apropos to our topics at hand.

For those who are teaching English and might have ESLs in their classroom, or just the struggling reader, I found these comprehension bookmarks! There are five types: Summarize, make predictions, draw conclusions, compare/contrast, and identify main ideas and details. This could be something used in either the ESL classroom or elementary classroom. I thought it would keep kids focused on why they're reading. It will allow them to look back and give them confidence. In my opinion, this little bookmark could encourage a struggling reader to keep working at it because they'll think they are "big kid" readers with a bookmark; this is something maybe their peers who are good at reading use.

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/538954280393254387/
