◦ Before Miss Smith took care of Ada, her skin was grey rather than milky white. 

◦She had calluses on her knees. Her clubfoot kept on hurting, it hurt even more if she put weight on it and if she put too much stress on it the skin near her ankle would tear up. 

◦She would not take a bath very often and wore dirty, ripped clothes.

◦After Miss Smith took care of Ada, she started wearing crutches, so her bad foot didn’t touch the ground. Thus resulting in she could walk without pain. 

◦Ada now started wearing a brown, leather shoe on her good left foot and her right foot which had clubfoot was properly and tightly bandaged.

◦She was now clean and wore clean clothes.

◦“Why?” I said, nearly spitting the word. I kept my voice low, but rage I didn’t know and felt gushed out of me. “So you can do anything you want, and I can do nothing at all? So I can’t boss you? So I can be shut up in a room?”

◦Rage that Ada never felt gushed out. This reveals to us that she was treated very cruelly when she was in London, locked up in the apartment. She was a prisoner in her own home.

◦ This also tells us that Ada did not like to show her anger to anyone and kept her anger and other emotions bottled up inside her.

◦ But this time, she couldn’t control it anymore.

Thoughts
◦Ada thought that that Billy’s mother liked her. But when they met at the train station and Billy’s mother was taking her children home she realized that Billy’s mother did not like her. 

◦She understood that Billy’s mother thought that she was a monster and realized that sometimes people’s actions do not actually reflect their feelings.

◦Ada had thought that she never needed taking care of. 

◦But overtime, while staying with Miss Smith she realized that no matter how independent you are and that you have always done thing on your own, you need to be taken care of.

Effects
◦Jamie is Ada’s little brother and is very loving and caring towards her. 

◦He will do anything for Ada.

◦Miss Smith takes care of Ada. 

◦She thinks that Ada is very independent and observant.

◦ As when Miss Smith neglected Ada and Jamie Ada helped her. She made Miss Smith the tea she liked, because she had carefully observed her and conveyed to Miss Smith that she was very thoughtful too.

Actions
◦ When a blue haired women wants to take Jamie when they arrive in the country side Ada tells the women that Jamie bites and steals and without her he might throw fits all the time. 

◦After Ada says this the blue haired women doesn’t want to take Jamie. This action of Ada shows that Ada doesn’t want to be separated from her brother. Jamie is her only friend and family she also takes care of him. She wants to be put in the same family as Jamie so that he is not mistreated and also doesn’t want to be separated from her sibling like all siblings.

◦When Jamie throws his plate on the wall because he only wants ham and he is only allowed to have more of it if he tries everything that is made for supper. But Jamie doesn’t want to so he throws his plate.

◦ When Jamie throws the plate Ada picks up a tomato from the ground and shoves it in his mouth then she also puts peas down his gullet. Ada does this because Jamie disobeys miss smith. She also does this so that miss smith doesn’t think that they are disobedient kids and sends them back to Mam as she wants to create a good impression

◦Miss Smith has frizzy yellow her that billowed around her thin face like a cloud.

Speech
◦Miss Smith let out a short, harsh laugh. You’re in luck then”, she said, “because I’m not a nice person at all”. Miss Smith said she was not a nice person, but her action proved that she was very helpful and empathetic. This tells us that she was not very good a communicating.

◦ Miss Smith snorted. That foots a long way from her brain.

◦This tells us Miss Smith does not care that Ada has clubfoot and she thinks that Ada should have the right to go to school. She does not think that Ada should be denied any privileges at all.

Thoughts
◦When the iron-faced women aka Lady Thorton told Miss Smith that she has to keep and take care of Ada and Jamie Miss Smith refused and thought that she wouldn’t know how to take care of them. 

◦It turned out that in the end she was quite good at it and they all gradually began to share a strong bond. 

◦This reveals to us that she underestimated herself and felt that as she was going through so much since Becky died she was broken and wasn’t going to be able to manage Ada and Jamie properly.

Effects
◦Ada was first hesitant of Miss Smith and assumed she will be cruel just like mam.

◦Jamie thoughts on Miss Smith kept on changing. He thought that sometimes she was mean as she didn’t allow him to go back home to mam, other times he thought she was kind.

Actions
◦When Jamie was throwing a tantrum about going back home with Billy White Miss Smith calmed him down and handled the situation very well instead of scolding him. This tells us that she’s very calm and patient. 

◦Miss Smith took Ada and Jamie to the doctor. She listened and carefully took down notes when the doctor spoke about their problems. This tells us that Miss Smith didn’t take them to the doctor for the sake of it. It shows one of her character traits that she is very caring and will help a person in need. 

◦Before Miss Smith took care of Jamie he was shabby and dirty looking. His finger nails were rimmed with black and full of dirt. This was because mam left him to his own devices and did not take proper care of him.

◦When Miss Smith took care of him he was much cleaner as he was now made to have a bath once a day.

Speech
◦“She misses me, Jamie said. “An, Ada will take care of me. Mam misses us. Right, Ada? Right? She wants us home!”

◦This quote which Jamie said tells us that he actually believes mam misses and loves Ada and he. 

◦This quote shows us how Jamie likes it at his home with Mam as he hopes that now everyone will love Ada like they love him. 

◦He hasn’t seen and experienced mams cruel and demoralizing behavior. He hasn’t been able to actually sum up mam and see her bad personality and awful traits.

◦On page 72.

Thoughts
◦Jamie was very easy to surprise as there were many things he wasn’t exposed to, so many things were new to him.

◦ Generally, what his thoughts were because of his upbringing did not match to what Miss Smith and other people thought. 

◦For example, Jamie was made to believe that Ada is not a normal person and that there are supposed to be restrictions for her. He told Miss Smith that Ada can’t go outside or even wear shoes.

Effects
◦At times Ada got angry at Jamie. But, she still loved him with all her heart and they shared a very strong bond. 

◦In chapters 4-12 of the war that saved my life Miss Smith just took care of Jamie and looked after him. Right now, Miss Smith did not have any feelings for him.

Actions
◦Jamie refused to eat anything as he didn’t like the food that was made. 

◦This tells us that like most children he was very stubborn and was a very fussy eater. He could be very close minded at times. 

◦At night Jamie cried into the pillow and wet the bed. He wanted to go back home to mam. 

◦This explains and tells us all that Jamie, like every child needs their mother. Even though mam did not spend anytime with Jamie, and did not love him Jamie was still very homesick and wanted to go back to London. This also tells us that Jamie was treated much better than Ada.
