I chose this topic because my mental health rotation opened my eyes to the heart of nursing, building genuine human connections. Working at Ontario Shores showed me that beyond assessments and care plans, it’s the relationships we form with our patients that make the biggest difference. This experience taught me how important it is to be present, listen deeply, and engage with patients beyond their diagnosis.

This topic is personal for me as both a nurse and a mother. My postpartum clinical experiences helped me see how vital it is to support new mothers not just physically, but emotionally and culturally. I chose this topic because it highlighted how postpartum care extends beyond clinical tasks, it’s about empowering mothers during one of the most vulnerable times of their lives.

I selected this topic because working in the NICU challenged me to reflect on the unique needs of vulnerable populations. It was not just about caring for critically ill infants, it was about advocating for families, fostering connection in high-pressure situations, and recognizing that compassion is as crucial as clinical competence. This experience deepened my understanding of family-centered care. I also chose to include my Heart of Knowing gallery art for this topic because it represents how I came to see advocacy and relational care as central to nursing, especially when supporting families in vulnerable situations. The NICU taught me that nursing is both a clinical role and a human one, where empathy and advocacy must work hand in hand.

I chose this topic because learning how to communicate therapeutically changed the way I approached patient care. In mental health nursing, I learned that words are not always the most important part, presence, empathy, and trust-building matter even more. This topic pushed me to reflect on how intentional communication can shape meaningful relationships with patients.

Balancing the demands of nursing school with the realities of being a new mom taught me resilience, patience, and how to manage emotional labor both at home and in clinical settings. Being able to provide care, even simple words of encouragement, felt full circle. That human connection made me want to advocate for new moms beyond just clinical care.

As a Filipino, I know how food plays a role in postpartum recovery. It reminded me that as nurses, we need to honor cultural practices in care because they hold emotional and spiritual value for families. This reflection taught me to always ask and listen before assuming what a patient needs.

This project represents my personal and professional journey as a nursing student and a new mother. Through my clinical experiences in mental health and maternal-child nursing, I discovered that nursing goes far beyond tasks and interventions — it’s deeply relational work. I chose these five topics because each one challenged me, shaped me, and reminded me of the power of human connection in care. Whether I was building trust with patients, supporting new mothers, advocating for NICU families, learning how to communicate therapeutically, or balancing the demands of motherhood and nursing school, I kept coming back to the heart of nursing — showing up with empathy, presence, and curiosity. This Padlet and podcast reflect how these experiences helped me grow into the kind of nurse I aspire to be — one who leads with heart and never stops reflecting on how to care better.

My team became a source of strength , we learned from each other, shared vulnerable moments, and supported one another. This experience showed me the importance of collaboration, not just for safe patient care but for personal growth as a nurse.
