During the afternoon, they were entertained by Dr. Ken Farquhar who delivered an amusing presentation entitled ‘How to Save the Planet in 45 minutes’.  Dr Ken took them through a carbon busting sustainability show exploring the science behind the environmental campaign that encourages households to reduce, reuse and recycle and how this links to pollution and climate change.  They then took part in an interactive quiz and finished our day by visiting the gift shop. 

 

All our students had a great time and many have asked if they could return to the museum at a later date!

Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with healthcare professionals throughout each day. This will empower students to make an informed career decision and demonstrate their commitment to healthcare in their UCAS applications.

Writtle University College’s ‘New Faces for Farming’ Residential School will take place on the evening of 31^st March until 2^nd April  and is a fully expensed, residential camp for young people aged 16-18 who reside in the UK and who are in Year 12 or 13  and interested in a career in farming, but perhaps not from a traditional agricultural background.

New Faces for Farming will be held at our countryside campus, near Chelmsford in Essex and will offer teenagers a taste of farm life and provide opportunities to think about a career in this sector. The students will be divided into groups and assigned the order in which they will fly. 

 

Flying:  Students will be given a full briefing on the aircraft, some basic flying principles, and all associated procedures. Before they fly in gliders or planes, students will put on a parachute and be instructed on how to use this. Students will then take their seat inside the aircraft with the instructor. They must listen to instructions throughout. 

 

The flight will take approx. 15-20 minutes, with them landing back on the airfield. The instructor will perform the take-off and landing; however, the student will be given an opportunity to experience the flight controls once in flight. 

 

Ground-based activity: This may include a tour of the airfield, a visit to air traffic control, other aviation companies based at the airfield, simulator flights or a STEM Ambassador workshop. 

 

Lunch:  Lunch for students will be provided. 

 

Refreshments for students: Water will be made available to students on the day, there may be opportunities to purchase further refreshments depending on the site. Please do not rely on this and bring everything with you that you think you will require. 

 

After Lunch:  The two groups of students will swap activities, from Flying to Ground activities or Ground activities to Flying.

The in person course is something very special indeed. It takes place at Kings in London on Sunday 21st May 2023 where students aged 14-18 are allowed to enter the dissection room. It is not a simulated course but rather a real dissection room with NHS doctors leading the day examining real medically donated specimens. When we ran this one in December we had students from all over the UK and Europe who travelled to attend and it was very warmly received.

This  workshop will take place on 24th May at the King’s College London, Strand Campus. 

This workshop will be run by the artist Kaifan Wang and the writer April Yee, who will lead students through some fun, creative exercises both in creative writing and visual arts. You’ll hear a series of interactive mini-lectures from world-leading academics and subject specialists.

The day will include a session on Shakespeare, and a close reading masterclass from Dr. Niall Munro, director of the Oxford Brookes Poetry Centre.

There will also be a reading and discussion with poet Fathima Zahra whose pamphlet Sargam / Swargam was recently published by ignitionpress, their in-house indie poetry press.

Lunch will be provided for attendees and you will have a tour around the campus – including our state-of-the art university library which is available to you as a study space.

There will be plenty of opportunities to chat with current students and staff.

o   Problem Solving – Maths and Forensics including Maths at University, Maths Careers, Forensic Science

·       A chance to create your own personalised action plan to see your own Route into STEM

·       Be able to learn about your career skills and how you could write about this in your CV/ Personal Statement or Application form

·       Once completed you will receive an Industrial Cadets Bronze Award showing all that you have achieved on the course

ROK has arranged for all nine of our GLA students that were in the semi-finals and the finals, to attend a Student Showcase at Haven Village London, on the 28th September, where our students will be showing employers and volunteers their presentations and models. This will be a great networking opportunity for the students and give them  positive exposure for their hard work and achievements.
