I was driving on the 94, heading to work. One of the DJ'S got a call from his wife, asking why they were not talking about it. He checked the news feed and it was just coming through. At the time, everyone thought it was an accident. Attorneys were calling the Court to see if they had to come in, which they did until about 9, at which time the building was closed and everyone sent home. It was eerily quiet outside as you don't notice planes in the air, but you DO notice when they are not there. Planes did not fly again for about 3 days, there was nothing on TV but coverage from New York, everyone was in shock.

I was on watch in SUPPLOT onboard USS CONSTELLATION CV 64. Watching CNN and at first I thought it was an accident then after the second plane hit the other building we knew it was a terror attack on the U.S. We were heading into San Diego after a six month deployment and we were ready to head back out. We waited for the word and after a couple of days we were allowed to head home. I remember my family was going to fly to San Diego and be there for our homecoming. The homecoming was a somber event.
J4

At first when you heard that a plane had hit the Trade Center I first thought it must be a small plane that went off course and it was an accident. Then the second plane hit and you knew it was not an accident. I still had to go to work but the entire day seemed so surreal. It was difficult to concentrate on work.

I was in the 11th grade and getting ready for school in Cheney, Washington. I remember watching the news as I got ready and immediately turning on the radio for my drive to school. My friend and I sat in silence listening to the radio as we drove. All day at school teachers had the news on in classrooms as we watched. That week at school was different. We spent a lot of time processing what was happening and learning more of the stories about the people who died and the rescue workers that were searching for people.

I was at home with three little kids and pregnant with our fourth. My mom called from Missouri to tell me that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center buildings. I quickly got on my computer (we didn't have a TV at the time) to see what was happening. I remember feeling like the world was tilted and anything was possible. Almost like it would be impossible for life to remain the same. My boys were in 1st and 5th grade at Blossom Valley Elementary. I took them to school and stayed. I just didn't feel like I could leave. I found work to do in their classrooms and just stayed the entire day. School felt safe because rituals just continued in spite of the world outside those walls. That is one of the most wonderful things about teachers, they know how to put kids first even when they are afraid or worried. I really needed to just be one of the kids that day!

I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Tanzania teaching physics (science) to high school students. On the evening of Sept 11 (morning in the US) I was standing at the mouth of a bat cave watching 1000s of bats fly out of the cave at dusk. The next morning, some of my students told me about what was going on in the US - they were surprised to see me in class. I didn't have a TV or computer at my house (or even electricity sometimes) so I hadn't heard any news yet. When I first heard the news, I simply did not believe it. I thought my students had seen a movie and were telling me about the movie - not telling me things that really happened.

I was walking across the black top and Kirk Hoeben, now principal at Blossom Valley, walked up to me and shared the devastating news. I'll never forget that moment. It was a somber day at Johnson that day. I do have fond memories of how the staff pulled together to support one another, reduced the impact on students and focused on them.

I was living in Los Angeles at the time. I was at home with my husband and two children and I was getting ready to go to work. I remember watching the second plane hit one of the buildings and I was confused and then scared. Scared for what the world would be like after this day. I was scared for the future and safety of my family. Since the attacks were so far away, I wanted the day to be somewhat normal for my children (9 and 4 years old at the time). As a family, we discussed what had happened. After that, I sent my oldest daughter to school and my youngest daughter to daycare but picked them up early. I needed them to have a normal day because we were not going to have any normal days for a while. Then later that day we gathered as family and enjoyed being together. This was also their Grandfather's birthday so we tried to celebrate his special day.
