         <description><![CDATA[<div>As a candidate learning to become a teacher, I have thought a lot about what I would do if I had an ELL student in my classroom.&nbsp;I think the most important things to consider when teaching the student is what they might already know based on their previous experiences and what their background at home might be. I feel like if I am constantly trying new strategies and working with other teachers on how differentiate for these students I will be successful. I think staying in touch with the ELL student and making sure that the accommodations are working for them is also a crucial way of making sure your students are getting the help they need.  </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Mrs. Terry and I had a great conversation about ELL students and how students that identify as ELL can be accommodated in several ways. Mrs. Terry emphasized that the first year for an ELL student in an American school is critical for building a strong foundation for the English language. She explained that many of the students have to learn so much in such a short amount o time so setting them for success in learning the language is extremely important.<br><br>Mrs. Terry said that when teaching ELL students, assignments have to be significantly modified in order to asses the student's knowledge due to the language barrier. She explained that the best strategy to assist an ELL student, is to work closely with an ESL teacher and ask for different strategies when deciding how to differentiate the materials and activities the student will need help with.&nbsp;<br><br>In the past, Mrs. Terry has used pictures to help explain what the class is talking about so that the student has a visual to make connections with. Mrs. Terry also modifies assessments in such a way as to ask specific questions that pertain to the "big idea" of the lesson or the most important concept she wants students to get from the lesson.&nbsp;<br><br>Mrs. Terry explained that as ELL students begin to build their vocabulary teaching them becomes so much easier. This is why she emphasizes learning with pictures to help students build a foundation of language. Mrs. Terry has also orally assessed some ELL students before. She explained that sometimes spoken language is easier for the ELL students to understand rather than reading or writing. </div>]]></description>
