Auburn Mason Reed's goal it to gain custody of her one and only son, after he's been taken under the custody of her fourteen - year - old dead boyfriend's mother. Her goals become increasingly harder after she met Owen Mason Gentry, whom she falls in love with. Owen's past criminal record will make it hard if not impossible for Auburn to gain custody over her son if they continue to be together.

Auburn learns that when it comes to her son she is willing to do anything for him. She also learns that she could be fierce in moments when it's needed. In the story when Lydia talks down on Auburn and makes her feel like a worthless mother Auburn allows it until Auburn got evidence that could ruin the career of Lydia's only son.

Trey, Lydia's son is a police officer who is manipulative threatens Auburn telling her " I suggest if you want to continue to be half-asses mother you are to my nephew, you'll do whatever the f I tell you..." He then continues to threaten and assaults her. But little did he know that Auburn put her phone on record and later used that evidence to gain custody of her son.

Remy's goal is to find his way back to his real family. He had realized for a long time that he was adopted by a kind woman named Barberin. Before then, when he was very young, he was kidnapped and brought to a French village. After a long time, passing through lots of adventures and stuff like that, he finally returned to his real family, which turned out to be a person he had known before then. It was more likely that the novel was about the journey toward finding his family rather than achieving the goal.

The damn thesis: Remy learned more about himself through the journey of the goal because when he passed through different families and friends and other generations, he soon discover more facts about himself, where he came from, why he was kidnapped, etc...
