Mystery fiction is a genre of fiction usually involving a mysterious death or a crime to be solved. Often with a closed circle of suspects, each suspect is usually provided with a credible motive and a reasonable opportunity for committing the crime ( Genre Characteristic Chart 144).

Mystery was made so the readers would be so engrossed in the text they would keep reading and want more. The first use of "mystery" in this sense was by Dime Mystery, which started out as an ordinary crime fiction magazine but switched to "weird menace" during the latter part of 1933 ( Genre Characteristic Chart 144).

Mystery is quite interesting not because it keeps you guessing but the thrill of it all. Mystery usually starts with action, tragic events. For instance a kidnapping, murder or even burning of something. That action is what gets the whole story thrilling.

Examples of Mystery Writers include: Tana French, Jo Nesbo, Dennis Lehane, John Sandford, and Laura Lippman.
Sources:
Genre Characteristic Chart; http://teacher.scholastic.com/reading/bestpractices/comprehension/genrechart.pdf

Novel is basically a work of prose fiction about forty thousand words or more (Mary 31). Usually Novels are long and the time to go through. In the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries as prose romances and adventure tales began to adopt techniques of history and travel narrative as well as memoir, letters, and biography (Mays 31).

Kind of novels include things like the Bildungsroman or the epistolary novel (Mays 6). There are many different novels and they very by genres. Unlike short stories novels are much longer.

Like any author teen I use to be obsessed with John green novels like The Fault in our Stars and paper towns. Also Raina Telgemeier comic novels were also an obsession of mine like her book Smile.

A short story is anywhere between one thousand and twenty thousand word (May 31). Short stories are not like novels they can be read in one sitting.

Short stories have been part of history for a long time. Now I say there very popular. I believe short stories are popular because of there length but they get to point just as fast. Short stories are not able to support any subplots. Short stories usually take place in a single setting. They usually have problems that are fixable in ten to fifty.

Because of the shorter length, a short story usually focuses on one plot, one main character (with a few additional minor characters), and one central theme, whereas a novel can tackle multiple plots and themes, with a variety of prominent characters (What Is Anatomy and Physiology?).

Sources: Mays, Kelly J. The Norton Introduction to Literature.
