One Valentine's Day, the school's typically strict headmistress (Rachel Roberts) treats the girls to a picnic field trip to an unusual but scenic volcanic formation called Hanging Rock. Despite rules against it, Miranda and several other girls venture off. It's not until the end of the day that the faculty realizes the girls and one of the teachers (Vivean Gray) have disappeared mysteriously.

Today we will work through film stills and quotations from the book to create a sequential narrative. the first half of the day you could work upon say 5 drawings and then in the afternoon begin a painting. 

Materials 

please prepare paper, this could be pre primed with cool washes or charcoal washes to create and ethereal atmosphere.
charcoal, oil pastel, watercolour etc.

Props

Try and bring some of your own environment into the story so that you don't just illustrate the text. “The weeping elm at the window was murmurous with gossiping doves.” 

Where were they going? What strange feminine secrets did they share in that last gay fateful hour?” 

“Why is it, Miranda,’ she whispered, ‘that such a sweet pretty creature is a schoolteacher – of all dreary things in the world . . .?” 

There was a delicious freedom about the swift steady motion of the drag and even in the warm dusty air blowing up in their faces that set the passengers chirping and chattering like budgerigars.

And this we do for pleasure,’ Greta McCraw muttered from the shadows, ‘so that we may shortly be at the mercy of venomous snakes and poisonous ants . . . how foolish can human creatures be!”

She became the fairy Queen of the forest of Colombiers in the French region of Poitou. One day, she and two of her subjects were guarding their sacred fountain when a young man, Raymond of Poitiers, burst out of the forest. Melusine spent the night talking with Raymond, and by dawn, they were betrothed, but with one condition. Melusine requested that Raymond promise that he would never see her on a Saturday. He agreed, and they were married. Melusine brought her husband great wealth and prosperity. She built the fortress of Lusignan so quickly that it appeared to be made by magic. Over time, Melusine built many castles, fortresses, churches, towers and towns, each in a single night, throughout the region. She and Raymond had ten children, but each child was flawed. The eldest had one red eye and one blue eye, the next had an ear larger than the other, another had a lion’s foot growing from his cheek, and another had but one eye. The sixth son was known as Geoffrey-with-the-great tooth, as he had a very large tooth. In spite of the deformities, the children were strong, talented and loved throughout the land.

One day, Raymond’s brother visited him and made Raymond very suspicious about the Saturday activities of his wife. So the next Saturday, Raymond sought his wife, finding her in her bath where he spied on her through a crack in the door. He was horrified to see that she had the body and tail of a serpent from her waist down. He said nothing until the day that their son, Geoffrey-with-the-great tooth, attacked a monastery and killed one hundred monks, including one of his brothers. Raymond accused Melusine of contaminating his line with her serpent nature, thus revealing that he had broken his promise to her.

As a result, Melusine turned into a fifteen-foot serpent, circled the castle three times, wailing piteously, and then flew away. She would return at night to visit her children, then vanish. Raymond was never happy again. Melusine appeared at the castle, wailing, whenever a count of Lusignan was about to die or a new one to be born. It was said that the noble line which originated with Melusine will reign until the end of the world. Her children included the King of Cyprus, the King of Armenia, the King of Bohemia, the Duke of Luxembourg, and the Lord of Lusignan.

I have chosen one which is the poem that opens Alice in Wonderland and is written by Lewis Carrol and another by a contemporary poet that I feel looks at the themes and ideas that Alice conjures up and perhaps ones that you too could conjure up in your own work too.

Things to Collect 
Perhaps collect an assortment of photographs from your life of you or your family or friends which depict a kind of journey or a fleeting moment or an event frozen in time, so that you can bring your own identity and personal self into the work. You can use the composition of the photograph to frame your images, and to look at perspective - if they are old photographs they might be blurred which would create a wonderful ghost like effect. or they might be a selfie style, a self portrait one where you are looking in at the old you looking back. You might want to carry on collecting the objects that were inspiring your worlds the last time we met and draw these into the compositions too, playing on the absurd scale that Alice evokes. 
these props could be anything that you can create a still life composition with from home and one where you can play around with scale and placement of objects. These could be props that have the faint smell of lingering ghost like memories possessing them. Try and get the feel of their materials and texture through your paint work

could be anything
How could you use these props to disrupt your compositions and hint at the fractured absurdity which was Alice. The poems are there to just create the overall feel and atmosphere you may wish  your paintings to take.

pen and paper - I find when working with text to go through and read the poem out loud to yourself and then underline the words that really stand out to you and base you composition or atmosphere around that - if your totally stuck for ideas with props these words could appear as objects instead.

paint of your choice
etc etc 


Lewis Carrol poem was written in 1865 - it is the introductory poem that recalls the afternoon that he improvised the story about Alice in Wonderland while on a boat trip from Oxford to Godstow, for the benefit of the three Liddell sisters: Lorina Charlotte (the flashing "Prima"), Alice Pleasance (the hoping "Secunda"), and Edith Mary (the interrupting "Tertia"). Alice gave her name to Carroll's main character.

All in the golden afternoon 
Full leisurely we glide;
For both our oars, with little skill,
By little arms are plied,
While little hands make vain pretence
Our wanderings to guide.

Ah, cruel Three! In such an hour,
Beneath such dreamy weather,
To beg a tale of breath too weak
To stir the tiniest feather!
Yet what can one poor voice avail
Against three tongues together?

Imperious Prima flashes forth
Her edict "to begin it"— 
In gentler tones Secunda hopes
"There will be nonsense in it!"—

At first they try to ignore the enticing calls of the goblin men, but eventually Laura decides to go out and see what's happening. Lizzie warns her not to, but Laura is too curious. The goblin men offer her their fruit, and Laura thinks it looks tasty. She doesn't have any money, but the goblins offer to take a piece of her golden hair instead. So Laura gives up some of her hair, gorges herself on goblin fruit, and heads on home to her sister.

But after eating all that goblin fruit, Laura starts to waste away. Lizzie gets worried and decides to go down to the market to see what's what. The goblin men try to tempt her the way they tempted Laura, but Lizzie stands firm. The goblin men turn violent and try to stuff fruit in Lizzie's mouth, but she squeezes her mouth shut, so they just end up getting juice all over her. Lizzie runs back to their house all covered in goblin fruit juice. Laura kisses the juice off her sister's cheeks and is miraculously, but painfully, healed.

draw from the text thinking of the above about how you can perhaps make it into a present day allegory or re - telling.

In the morning perhaps read through the poem drawing from different sections of it.

Draw from fruit that you have around the house make it in to a tempting still life?
or with people with who you live with coming in and interrupting the space of the still life with glistening fruit.

The works that I have chosen are by three painters that all have a dreamlike gothic or romantic and mostly nightmarish quality to them so I thought I would get you to recreate your own versions by using a dream or nightmare that you have had, or from elements of your life, things around you - things on the news maybe even government figures could make an appearence, but you could also use your daily routine, walk elements of memory and dip into your archival material if you like to work that way, fragments of your own world will help to give the transcription a present day feel.

The resulting anthropomorphic works hopefully will relate to the Kafka story in so much as they describe a similar altercation however you do not need to stick to closely to it. 

After making these collages from your drawings in the morning  you will create a final painting from the cut out compositions. You may wish to create a scene of several hybrids or perhaps a self portrait. 

During the morning I will also ask you to make a touch self portrait whereby you feel what is underneath your finger tips instead of looking and studying your face.
