The environment is more than just what we see around us. It is life sustaining. It is in our hands to make sure it is protected. Below are some statistics that are critical when assessing the impact that our ecosystems are facing:

1.6 billion people depend directly on forests for their basic livelihoods.

10% of global carbon emissions are a result of deforestation and forest degradation.

Forests are home to more than 80% of all terrestrial species of animals, plants and insects.

Mountain regions provide 60-80% of the Earth's fresh water.

As members of the community and individuals who are reliant on the ecosystem, it is our responsibility to do our duty in ensuing the ecosystems are being maintained rather than destroyed and replaced rather than neglected. The environment cannot heal itself, it needs our help in combating deforestation, pollution, protecting threatened species and restoration.

Individuals need to participate in restoration projects. The active participation gives individuals a sense of ownership and a personal connection to the environment in which they restored.

Efforts to maintain the ecosystems need to be a daily effort within the community, not just when a problem arrises. A daily, continuous effort to preserve the ecosystems need to be a priority for all members of the community.

Reduction of impacts, is a responsibility that falls in the hands of the community. Consider how natural goods are harvested, consumed, market and disposed of. Regulations placed on farms, fisheries, forestries and mining industries could aid in environment conservation. Actions such as pollution, clearing of ecosystems, spread of invasive species, contamination and over supply and demand are all contributors to the degradation.

Aid in the reduction of litter and trash by collecting any that is found polluting the environment. This applies to roadways, public areas and waterways.

Stay on top of degradation to halt it and begin restoration efforts as soon as possible to prevent total degradation of an ecosystem.

Gann, G.
