Free Library Intern

I will be assisting Molly van den Heuvel and JoAnne Woods, the children’s librarians, at the Andorra branch of the Philadelphia Free Library as an intern. So far, I’ve been leading the Nature in your Neighborhood program, a program created by JoAnne that meets every Tuesday at 4pm-5pm. The purpose of this program is for middle schoolers to learn about nature and to express themselves artistically, while also getting in some much missed socialization time because of covid. Specifically, I find a short video and teach a little lesson about some aspect of nature, usually fun stuff like animals and plants, and then I give the kids some work time to go create some art or poetry or writing or whatever they want, and then we gather at the end to share our work. I also sometimes show an art or craft tutorial and help the kids do it. The library just got the go ahead for in-person programs, so next week(4/20), the program will be moving to in-person nature walks. These walks will be at the same time, 4pm-5pm Tuesday, and will take place at the Roxborough Reservoir or the Schuylkill Valley Nature Center. I will be going on these walks to help JoAnne with managing the kids and teaching lessons. That’s the main project that I’m working on right now with JoAnne, but I’m also working on some projects with Molly. The main thing I’m doing right now for Molly is making instructional art and craft videos for them to show to kids during their summer programs, these tutorials include stuff like origami, seed starters, simple crafts, etc. There is also the possibility that I might be able to go help Molly in-person at the Andorra library, as she is working on some gardening programs there, but the details of that are still being worked out. There is also the possibility that I’ll be able to create my own program, and JoAnne and Molly will help me organize and advertise it.
