The <em>cumbe</em> of Ocoyta was eventually destroyed in 1771. A military expedition led by German de Aguilera destroyed the settlement. There were many <em>cumbes</em> in the interior of what later became Venezuela. In 1810, when the War of Independence began, many members of these <em>cumbes</em> fought on the side of the rebels, and abandoned their villages</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1526, Domingo Benjos Biohó led the escape along with 10 other slaves, who were brought to Cartagena, after a shipwreck. There, they established an escaped slave army to conquer and settle in Montes de Maria. In 1605, the governor offered a peace treaty, but this was violated a few years later through the execution of Domingo. However, the government finally established the people living in Palenque as free after the colonization continued to grow, making them the first free Africans in the Americas.</div>]]></description>
