In high school, the technological shift in education has been tremendous. I have been teaching for 12 years and the beginning of my career was a shift to add technology to your presentations (teacher centered). This would be using presentation tools such as power point and smart boards projectors. The biggest change in the past few years is the students are required to bring their own devices and the learning is a student-centered approach.

In our high school, we have made a fundamental shift from teacher centered instruction to a student centered, inquiry based model. With the use of technology, this provides the student with independence to pursue a question or curiosity and develop their own path of learning. In addition, we have implemented experiential learning to help support our curriculum to help provide the students are more meaningful and authentic experience to support their learning.

The change in technology seen in K-12 schools has been huge in the last 20 years. TV carts and computer rooms are now replaced by smart boards, Ipad carts, laptops and cellphones. The daily access we have to technology now allows us to use technology multiple times a day, as compared to 20 years ago where we would have to schedule our turn around the rest of the school. Currently I work as a DL teacher, where almost all of our courses are solely online.
I would imagine if there was a DL equivalent 20 years ago, it would be a photocopied package of course notes and assignments.

In the last few years, we are seeing a large shift towards, student centred activities, problem solving, project and inquiry based assignments. This shift is possible partially due to the access of technology that allows for more freedom within the classroom.

I have been teaching in Trades training now for almost 10 years. There has been significant changes in technology just in the past 10 years, let alone the past 20.
In mine time I have seen:

Document cameras replaced overheads. This allows me to show the whole class an item instead of passing it around. Or to show them something out of the textbook.

Online video. To me this is one of the biggest and most valuable changes. The students now have access to other ways of learning topics. It also allows me to post lessons online for students who may have missed class or are struggling with topics.

Social media. Social media can be a powerful tool for students. Online communities provide help and support. It is not just a place for students to get distracted.

Online assessment tools. Tools such as Kahoot and Socrative are fun for the students and help us as teachers assess the areas where they may be struggling the most.

In my opinion it is a very exciting time to be an educator. I don't think anything beats face to face time with a teacher who cares. That being said there are a multitude of tool that can help make the process easier and more fun for teachers and students alike.

For the past 20 years the predominant teaching method has been the "sage from the stage" model. It is top down. The instructor is seen as an expert and as a boss. The students are there to glean knowledge from them.

It seems like this is still the predominant method used. There seems to be a growing contingent of trades teachers that are finding value in the student centered model. There is a lot more room for discussion and troubleshooting with this method. Students seem to learn better from themselves than they do from a traditional lecturer/student hierarchy.

In the healthcare sector there are probably too many innovations to count. That being said, there is one in particular that I feel impacts the largest number of patients, physicians nurses, administrative staff, allied health professionals, etc. and that is the evolution of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). EMR's are not a new innovation, however the amount of information and detail going into the EMR's are becoming quite substantial and the automation of notifications is allowing for greater impacts of health. Your EMR once only held the most recent information about your health, now the information about your parents helps assess your risk of developing specific illnesses, your mental health is being taken into consideration, you work, stress levels, exercise, eating habits, are all not becoming part of a heath system that can analyses the data and help the physician create a plan to your greatest benefit. This helps keep people out of hospitals as they are now actively taking a role in their own health. For the first time patients are being given access to their own health records to be able to check for accuracy and their own risk assessment. The latest endeavour is creating an EMR that is universally connected to all practices, clinics, specialty care, and hospitals so that each patient has one source of truth when it comes to his/her health history.

It was a lot of trial and error and learning from each other which meant there were less models and not a strong pedagogical approach. This lack of formal education has led to a lot of inquiry based learning and collaboration.

Increased internet speeds and new collaborative tools made distance learning possible. Distance learning evolved in many forms: eLearning, webinars, virtual classrooms, online collaborative learning tools, gamification (such as Second Life). LMSs and rapid eLearning authoring tools (such as Articulate Storyline, Articulate 360) allowed companies to convert instructor-led content to eLearning.

As a result, organizations deployed increased numbers of online courseware that became more and more engaging through the use of high quality graphic design, animations and videos. This came about as there was considerable discussion in our industry regarding learning and social styles. Corporations welcomed the X and the Y generations who managed to leverage and master online and mobile technology, compared to the baby boomers.

Therefore, in order to meet their learning expectations, past workplace learning practices have been challenged significantly.

In the College environment the greatest technological change has been the move to a digital learning environment, not just for online, but also for F2F classes. Students hand in their assignments online, hard copies are not accepted anymore. All grades are recorded in an online grade book and all classes have a Moodle shell as a course resource site. Teaching in the classroom has moved from using overheads, writing on the blackboard or Flipchart to using powerpoint. Instructors use videos to enrich their class content and to make the learning environment more diverse. Students take notes on their iPads and laptops, and instead of coming together in social groups face to face, students have their on social media groups on facebook. Technology has quietly taken up space in all areas of a College environment. It has brought diversity to the learning environment and it has closed distances between learners.

The early years, the education of 0 to 5 year olds, teaching has moved to a inquiry based model over the past 15 years. Children are viewed has capable and born learners. They are also seen as having autonomy over their own learning and being collaborative contributors to their learning environment. This view of the learner has now found its way into adult education. Instruction in secondary education has moved from the traditional lecturing to a highly interactive and engaging classroom. Assessments are authentic, lined up with the learning outcomes of a course and students are often asked to do their own and peer assessments. I have courses in which up to 35% of a grade are now based on a self and peer assessment. Learners are viewed not as empty vessels needing to be filled, but as active contributors and participants in their own learning.

Over the last 20 years, particularly in Taiwan, every part of school education is centered on teachers and initiated only by teachers. Students tend to be more passive in education scenarios and their learning process. However, in recent years, we have seen and also got involved in the huge shift at school, where students are now launching many activities, sharing accountability and initiating to find and solve the problems as a result of the help from technology and internet. Internet and online resources kind of become teachers as well. Nowadays, it's common to for teachers to incorporate online resources into their teaching to better improve the way of learning.

Social Network and online collaborating platform have played a significant role in students' learning. The team work and online discussion can now be conducted with less and less distance and time constraints.

Another tremendous change is online video sharing platform, particularly Youtube. Youtube has been the most popular resources for students to search learn on their own. It has also become a channel that students can share their learning results with others in the most creative way.

Finally, online distant learning has substantially grown in recent years. Perhaps ten or twenty years ago, fully online distant learning sounds unrealistic with many down sides. However, with the advent of many technology tools, many of courses in college can be taken via fully online delivery or blended delivery. This has also bridged the gap between different social classes where people can access to the resources without geographic or financial limitations.

There has been so many changes over the past 20 years in the credit union system as it relates to technology disrupters and game changers. For example, we are able to make cheque deposits with a an application called deposit anywhere right off your smart phone or iPhone. All you do is log in to online banking, select the picture image of the cheque and DEPOSIT! Another one is we can complete transfers with our computers or phones via e-Transfers to anyone in Canada, with simply just an email address or phone number. We have also seen how you make payments for goods and services evolve to include apple pay and dashbands. And finally walking in to a branch is very different ... one can argue do you even need a physical foot print of a branch. With online banking, contact centres, banking apps with alerts on your phone, automatic credit and debits and digital conceriges helping members do a variety of transactions without the need to interact with a live person face to face.

As for specifically learning in the space of our credit union, we have seen many shifts with employees working from home. The shift of less with more. The mitigation of risk, ensuring our staff are competent in their roles. We have evolved to simple and accessible LMS systems, accessible via anywhere in the world to on your phone through a mobile app. We have shifted away from classroom training to virtual classrooms, whether they are live and/or recorded. We have micro videos and e-Learnings requiring less time to complete, with application level assessments.

We depend more on our intranet and internet for low level basics knowledge, for individuals to get this information is easily accessible. We focus on more real time search results where they can locate basic information. We focus more on moderately complex skills and up, teaching more at the level of critical thinking and decision making and what it means to them in situations on the job.

Super exciting times!

Dorothy Sidhu

Our health care professionals were at one point responsible for their own continuous learning. This was before the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) and Alberta Health Service (AHS) stepped in and mandated continuous improvement among both frontline workers and admin. This began clinic assessments and in-class education opportunities as well as the MyLearningLink (MML) online learning portal. These still have their shortcomings as in-person classes are difficult to gain ubiquity in rural areas and the MML are only accessible behind the AHS firewall, stopping those outside of AHS from being able to access the same resources, such as Neloxone kit training. This gap lead the way to using the Absorb portal to allow non-AHS clinics and health care professionals access to the same online courses.
