We just don't randomly talk about 10s and 1s in our daily lives. So it's important to highlight that and treat math as a language that we get to teach everyday! It truly guides student learning and gives the teacher an idea of student understanding of the core lesson. Also, the importance of scaffolds and translations for our multilingual learners to support their understanding of the lesson. My biggest take away is the focus and importance of introducing and building math vocabulary with our young TK and K students. Once we introduce, explain, model, repeat... the students get exposure and build upon what they know as they transition into the other grades.
