“Granny C, ain’t … ridiculous hat?” (p. 7).

This quote is about Granny C a side character. Charlene asks her if she is hot in that “ridiculous hat”, which shows how the younger characters laugh at her and don’t take her seriously. The hat itself is described as ridiculous, making Granny C seem odd and out of place, while also showing her stubbornness in continuing to wear it even though it makes her uncomfortable. At the same time, this moment showsher vulnerability because the other characters mock her instead of protecting her. The detail about the hat gives the reader into how Granny C is viewed in her community she’s treated like a joke, but also like someone fragile who doesn’t quite fit in.

“Somebody. He’s dead … You’ll see.” (p. 12)

This section has the side character Daisy warning the main character Delroy about a dead person nearby, making the scene all the more tense. Delroy clearly has the lead character status because everything hinges on what he chooses to do next; by quickly reaching for his pistol, he shows he is nervous but nevertheless prepared to protect them both should anything go wrong. The way Daisy repeats the word “dead” and ends with “You’ll see” underscores how terrified she is and leaves us as readers speculating about what is to come, building suspense for the reader and putting it into context as a pivotal moment for both characters.

“The Black man’s … breaking into the place” (p. 28).

This quote is about the detectives Ed and Jim which is the main charater of the story, and the dead Black man who is part of the mystery. The Black mans corpse was missing which makes everything confusing. The report also says that there was no sign of breaking in so the crime feels strange. These details show the mystery is getting harder to explain. They also show the detectives don’t really know what to think yet which makes them seem confused.

“Fuck you, old … Wheat is dead!” (p. 31).

This quote is about Charlene a side character, reacting after finding Wheat’s body. She yells at Granny C, showing her anger and panic, while also shouting that “Wheat is dead”, which makes the situation clear and shocking. The detail that Charlene curses at her own grandmother shows how intense the moment is and how much fear is driving her words to say that. This is important because it shows how Wheat’s death shakes the whole family and changes the way they treat each other.

Granny C is stubborn but also kind of weak cause she keeps wearing her “ridiculous hat” even when people laugh at her and it makes her look weird. The detail about the hat shows she is treated like a joke but also like someone fragile.Charlene is more emotional and panicy when she finds Wheat’s body since she yells at Granny C and shouts “Wheat is dead.” Her cussing at her grandma shows how scared she is and how fear is making her talk like that. Together this shows Granny C is stubbron and different to charlene while charlene is loud and quick to freak out when stuff happens.
