Approach for the 20 mins prep time:

1. Read the passage and the guiding questions twice, underlining the key words

2. Identify your two or three big themes/ideas in the passage. Note down what they are, making sure you are precise

3. Find techniques that are used to develop and analyse your themes and make some notes.

4. Sequence your points so that you are clear about the order in which you will make each of the points. Make sure your intro to these points has a clear thesis statement.

6. Try to quickly rehearse what you are going to say - this will help you organise your ideas in your mind

Structure: How could the eight minutes be organized?

It is best to use a formal structure to help you keep track of your points and to make sure you cover all of the content you wish to. There are many structures to choose from.
1. Pillar construction
Organize your speech around 3 main arguments, which you describe as being the "pillars" of your argument. For example, if asked "How does stanza structure reflect the development of the poem’s subject?" your pillars might be:

The shift from the opening lines to the closing lines reinforces the theme

The emphasis of the words at the end of each line creates a clear tone

The use of metaphor on every second line reinforces the theme

You would then use your eight minutes discussing each of these three points in more detail.

Conclusions: How could you conclude your commentary?

There is no need to feel stressed cause your IOC is about to end

Draft two or three sentences which will act as a conclusion (lasting between 30 seconds and 1 minute).

This should be a brief summary of your commentary, perhaps referring back to the text as a whole and the place of the excerpt within that text.

A personal response may also work well here.

Remember, at this point, you should emphasize and summarize what you mean without deviating from the main topic.
