"Involuntarily I glanced seaward--and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far way, that might have been the end of a dock." (p. 21): Simon Vo

This quote was said by Nick way before he had even met Gatsby. All he saw was the green light across the bay, upon returning home. Then he had connected the dots. He had seen Gatsby reaching out to the green light, as if it was some sort of sign to him. Gatsby was envisioning his future with Daisy by physically reaching out to the light that was the closest thing he had of Daisy in the last few years.

"It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects has diminished by one." (p. 93): Ansel Charlton

This quote was said by nick after seeing Gatsby with Daisy. Once Gatsby had attained Daisy and had her with him, the significance of the light went away as he no longer envied Tom for what he had because the only thing Gatsby wanted from him was Daisy. After Daisy goes back with Gatsby, the light returns to being a normal light he sees across the bay and not something forever out of reach.

Characters' related to this symbol: Ansel Charlton

Characters that relate to the symbol of the green light are Gatsby, Daisy, and Tom. Gatsby relates to the green light because from a young age Gatsby was always ambitious and tried the achieve his goals. For years Daisy has lived across the bay with Tom, which gave Gatsby a reason to always want something that Tom had. Daisy has always been wealthy and gotten the finer things in life and financial security has always been important to her and for her daughter.

Daisy most always got what she wanted whether it be from Tom or whomever but the spoiled lifestyle always left her wanting more. Tom is more or less the same as Daisy as he was brought up in wealth and has gotten the finer things in life. Even Daisy wasn't enough for him, he wanted even more which comes in the form of cheating on her with other women.

Themes relating to the symbol: Simon Vo

The themes that would connect the symbol of the green light, to the story would be: The american dream and time. The american dream would be a theme of this symbol because Gatsby is always seen reaching out or looking to the green light. This light could be his way of looking towards the promising future. Looking towards his future wife, starting a family with her. The green light was the closest thing he had to Daisy in the time that he had moved across from her house.

The other theme that relates to the green light is time. When Daisy and Gatsby finally meet once again, he keeps on saying to her that they will be together soon, always looking towards the green light. The light promises an imminent future that Gatsby could have with Daisy if he plays his cards right. When they visit Tom and Daisy's home, Gatsby points out the green light to Tom, but Gatsby only sees it as a green light now, because he knows that future he had once striven for is happening now. Everything that the light related to is in the past now because his dream of having Daisy was already in the process of finalizing.
