"Until now Ashima has accepted that there is no one to sweep the floor, or do the dishes, or wash clothes, or shop for groceries, or prepare a meal on the days she is homesick or cross. Ashima has accepted that the very lack of such amnesties is the American way." Ashima is referring to the how Alan and Judy's home is unkept and did not attempt to keep it tidy. Ashima is uncomfortable about being around it and is not optimistic about certain aspects of American life."

"Ashima is now officially referred to by the maternity nurses as the Jell-O-and-Ice-Cream Lady." Ashima struggles with fitting in here in America. She feels alone in the hospital and she does not bond well with any of the other women. None of the American women reach out to her and she feels very out of place. However, this quote shows that she is warming up to the nurses. She is getting used to being in the hospital and is letting the nurses take care of her. Even though she feels awfully sick, she is still trying to eat what she can. This shows how strong Ashima's character is. She is determined and is willing to push through her tough circumstances here in America. She is open to her life here in America.

Ashima admits to Ashoke that she doesn't think she can raise this child in America. This reveals that Ashima isn't permissive. She hadn't spoken up previously, but giving birth and adjusting to her new life has pushed her to her limit. She isn't just gonna let her husband call all the shots, as she tells him to "hurry up" and finish his degree. As a teen/young adult, she was ready to be fully independent. She doesn't rely on her busband for everything.
