Sugar Hill Records was founded by husband and wife, Joe and Sylvia Robinson, in 1979. They were responsible for releasing some of the most important records.
But Def Jam Records, founded by Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons, became synonymous with the period known as the Golden Age of Hip Hop.
They released music from people like LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys.
Rap music was growing in popularity. It was, among others, reflected by the show Yo MTV Raps, which was solely dedicated to hip hop and the music magazine The Source.
Female hip hop groups also sprouted, and the group Salt-N-Pepa rapped about the condition of women.
Social criticism was still a focal point of hip hop.
A new genre called Gangsta rap came to existence. It told the struggles of the tough lif of gangsters and the violent conflicts between black gangs.
The Golden Age of Hip Hop did not only bring increased visibility and success in sales, but also stylistic diversity and artistic quality.

This caused the rise of rappers like Jay-Z, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Ras Kass and the soulful rapper Common.
It also led to the rise of numerous female rappers in the Hip Hop industry, known as Foxy Brown, Lauryn Hill, Lil' Kim, The Lady of Rage, Mia X and Missy Elliot. Group konstellations continued with The Roots, The Fugues, The Wu-Tang Plan and Outkast.

The man responsible for bringing rap music into the new millennium was the former N.W.A rapper and producer Dr. Dre, when he shaped the sound of The Slim Shady LP from 1999, the debut album from an up and coming white rapper, Eminem.
