      <description>All living organisms are made up of cells. Although some organisms consist of only one cell and others of several billion, even the most complex organism begins life as a single cell, the fertilized egg. In most multicellular organisms including humans, a single cell divides to form two cells, and each new cell divides again and again, eventually forming the complex tissues, organs and systems of the developed organism. Like the bricks of a building, cells are the building blocks of all living things. The cell is the smallest unit of living material capable of carrying on all the activities necessary for life.
Many animals and plants are multicellular, that is they are composed of many different types of cells, each with a characteristic size, shape, structure and function.
In multicellular organisms cells are organized in tissues; the cells of a tissue share similar characteristics and work together to carry out a specific function, their form fits their function.

This unit is framed on the global context globalization and sustainability; through it students will explore the fact about how society uses the knowledge about cells to develop solutions for worldwide problems and needs. Besides, it also opens an opportunity to explore the concepts of form and function answering to the question: How does the form of a cell fit its function?
The content to be studied includes the cell theory, animal and plant cells, animal and plant tissues, and the compound microscope.

Assessment will be based on laboratories, exams, differentiated projects, quizzes, and research.  The end of the unit project will be based on the organization of &quot;The Cellular museum&quot;; for that at the beginning of the unit each student will be given the name of a cell (either plant or animal); he/she will research about how this type of cell is used to generate solutions that impact human life, will make a 3D model to show how the structure of the cell fits its functions, and will reflect upon the fact of how would our live be without the solution generated from this type of cell.
