The purpose lies in the motive for the song. For many, music is a matter of emotions; For others, it's an opportunity to make a statement. These statements can be anything from social movements to political protest. Music can work hand in hand with a movement to unify the people. To travel outside my realm of taste, I found a song called Hijab by Mona Haydar. The song contains the lyrics "Power run deep so even if you hate it, I still wrap my hijab" (Mona). This song is a response to the stigma that comes with middle eastern women that decide to embrace their traditions in America. The prejudice and discrimination directed towards them led woman, like Mona Haydar, to speak out of this. They shouldn't have to change because we don't consider their habits a social norm. They should continue to wear their hijabs. Another song that advocates political change is You are the problem by First Aid Kit . The song starts off by saying "All these women with their dreams shattered, from somes man sweaty, desperate touch" (First Aid Kit). This song discusses the problems of rape and sexual assault.
