         <description><![CDATA[<div>Minds On:&nbsp;<br>- Preview the text<br>- Ask: What is tax? What do you know about it? What do you wonder?<br>- Pre-teach any necessary vocabulary<br><br>Lesson:<br>- Read the book together, pausing to discuss/answer questions<br>- Welcome discussion and questions about taxes and the content of the text<br>- Have students choose three items from the menu (page 10) to purchase. As a class calculate the initial price, HST, and total price<br><br>Consolidation:<br>- Provide students with paper or online flyers<br>- Have students choose five items to purchase<br>- Ask students to calculate the total cost of the items, without sales tax, in dollars and cents<br>- Discuss what happens if someone is paying cash (no pennies)<br>- Students determine the total cost of items, including taxes.<br><br><br></div>]]></description>
