This discourages women from taking on more leadership roles such as superintendent.

Women are naturally not expected to take such roles in their careers such as superintendent. Men are more inclined to hold such roles as "leaders" even though women have been supporting education on their back since the beginning.

There aren't more women superintendents because of the the backlash or criticism that they faced. Another reason would be the 20,000-30,000 wage gap. This is keeping women from applying or trying to become superintendents because it isn't fair.

One thing I found interesting is how there are plenty of talented and qualified women to become superintendents but none of them get hired. This shows how gender bias is strongly prevalent in the hiring industry. This can lead to women getting discouraged and not attempting to take on major roles such as leadership.

This article brings the gender gap in school leadership to the light. During COVID-19 there was an overturn where a lot of women quit their jobs to pay more attention to their home life. Even though the virus has calmed down, this trend continues. A lot of women do not apply for superintendent and when they do, they still aren't hired. I think that women are held to a different standard than men are in the workplace and it transfers over to all fields, including education. Women are expected to prove themselves more than men are, especially in a leadership setting, which discourages them from trying. A solution to this problem is to revise the hiring process for these job positions and provide more support for women who want to apply.

COVID-19 set all of society back, especially women. Women are “the backbone and brain trust of America’s public schools” and as discussed in our class they dominate in elementary and middle school teacher positions. Then why aren’t there many woman superintendents? This article discusses how there are many talented women out there, but they don’t even apply for the position because even if they do there is a possibility they are going to get rejected. The pay and criticism further discourage them from pursuing such careers. I have met amazing teachers who love their children and advocate for real change. But they won't even try to get one of those high positions because they know they are biased and discriminatory. This is a shame because these teachers and women care about their children and I believe they wouldn’t even do it for the position or the pay but just to help their kids. This is sad because this is what is making many teachers leave their fields.

The article discussed even when there are really talented woman, they can still be overshadowed by man gunning for the same position. A lot of this is because of societal pressures and norms. Everyone is so used to how the world is currently ran that sometimes people at the bottom of the social ladder, which can be women at many times, get stuck at the bottom even if it's through subconscious actions.

One of the most interesting topics of the article was the large difference between male and female superintendents in both amount and pay. I do think both play a part in why the other is so low. If there aren't many female superintendents, they get paid less. But at the same time, if they are paid less, women don't have the vigor to become a superintendent.
