1. Some people understand the importance of helping others in and out of the community, and that not all hard work should need to be rewarded with money. Volunteering lets people see the impact that even small actions they take can have on the lives of others.
2. Other people, as students on here are saying, are too busy or do not have enough time, skills or access to volunteer for an hour a week, so could either do other small tasks for their community or donate to a charity instead of working directly with them.
Either way, I think volunteer work makes much more of a difference than people would think, and the more impact charities have, the more awareness is raised about the issues they represent. This can help to gain national or even international attention and begin to solve the root to the problems instead of just its effects, such as reducing conflict in the Middle East by stopping arms trade from the West instead of just providing support to refugees whose lives have already suffered. Therefore, I partly agree with the statement as far as the importance of volunteering and charity work, but I think people should help these causes in whichever way(s) they can personally.
- Abigail Williams (aka Bryony)

I don't think anyone should find themselves 'too busy' to help those less fortunate, because you have to agree that volunteering comes in more than one form. Different volunteering requires different amounts of effort and while some people have busier schedules than others, you would very rarely be completely too busy to help out your community and others. Everyone lives in this world, and so everyone should contribute to it. Expecting others to do what you don't want to in your place is just entitlement, a quality which, hypocritically, people tend to find unattractive and yet exert that very thing themselves. However, there is always the issue of money. In the capitalist society that most of the world lives in, it is important to have a source of income to ensure that you can keep yourself and others fed, watered etc. This means that volunteering, although it may help others, would also be a burden to yourself. To conclude,I disagree with the statement, because I believe those who create the mess should be tasked with cleaning it up. If everyone does their part to get rid of any mess they've made, then everything will stay equal, and there is a lack of need for volunteering.

Many people have at least a little spare time in their day which they could easily spending volunteering. Also some charities such as Flicka give volunteers the chance to work with animals which some people love so it can also become hobby.

Also, from a more practical point of view, volunteering is something that you can put on CVs to possibly increase your chances of getting a job.

James

I think that it is important that every one try’s to volunteer if they can but also I understand that some people just don’t have the time. I don’t exactly think that everyone everywhere should have to volunteer once a week as this may just be too difficult for them. For example if a full time doctor had to volunteer as well as treat people every day then it would be an unfare work load for them in compared to someone who only had a part time job. However this could be balanced out if part time workers did more volunteering. Also if one of your family members was dying then you would want to be with them so then you should be excused from your volunteering.

I believe if a country impacts its citizens, then it also is required to repair the damages it causes, meaning a low quality of life is down to the country, which legally taxes it's other, more fortunate citizens, which gives it the money to repair what has happened. Moreover,I would argue that giving taxes is a form of volunteering. Apart from the consent, you are actually giving money to the government of your country and they use that to improve it.

Hollie's Opinion

I think that volunteering shouldn't be considered a burden or something that has to be carried out, like it is a chore or a job someone doesn't particularly enjoy. I think that in order for volunteering to be successful the person must enjoy or have some reason they are doing it other than the reason
" they have to ". If no thought or care is put to why they do it, I think that it doesn't effect the people around them in a positive way considering charities are there to instil a world of hope. Therefore I think a person should choose to do it out of their own goodwill, it makes the part they play more meaningful, more justified in the actions taken.

In my opinion, if everyone started to volunteer it would take the meaning out of a charity and why it is there. People may feel that since they spend some of their life helping out a charity ( in some cases ) they do not care for, would allow a decrease in the amount of money and funds being put into charities and organisations to keep them afloat and working. Making occasions like Red Nose Day and Pudsey Bear Day, seem pointless and they wouldn't be able to keep going due to people feeling like that just because they have given up an hour of their life, they've given more than enough to charities, so none of their hard earned money should be spent on something they believe they have already helped. In some ways, this is true but that is not the way charities work and is not the attitude people should adopt towards them. However, this wouldn't be the same for everyone.

As for the part of it being once a week, yes it is a great way of showing commitment and dedication but can be a struggle for some people, with different work hours and what their job entitles them to do playing a big part in how often volunteering can be achieved by a person. On this point, Isaac commented about how part-time workers could do more volunteering, to balance it out. I disagree with this point of view, part-time workers usually have reasons to why they can't work full time, like mothers with younger children who need to be picked up from school or daycare, which going to Laz's point about money, daycare and other living expenses for children need to be taken care of. In most cases it is extremely expensive. Another reason why people can't work full time may simply be the fact that their job doesn't enable them to. So for this point, I feel the situation for each individual would have to be looked at separately, which is time consuming and costly, therefore would be an impractical solution to a problem.

Going back to the first point, anytime people could spend on helping a charity would make the world a better place, but shouldn't have a rule or law placed on it, making what should be an act of goodwill seem like a mundane task for the participant. Therefore, I personally disagree with the statement.
