Our interview with Jake Schneider - 3D by Alia El Khaffafi

Back in March, we interviewed Jake Schneider. Jake is American, he comes from New Jersey. He translates literature from English to German and he is an editor too. We talked about his work as a translator and about his experience as the editor of SAND magazine - a literary magazine based in Berlin which publishes innovative pieces written in English and aims at highlighting works that deal with minority experiences. Jake also shared his views on plurilingualism and the role of English in the expat community in Berlin. Moreover, as we had worked on minority languages and drawn our own language portraits, we were excited to know more about Jake's views on plurilingualism and on his personal relationship to the different languages in his life - including his love for Yiddish. Jake, thanks so much for accepting to have a chat with us! Thanks for being so open and friendly!

My favorite moment was when Jake talked about the LGBTQ+ community because homosexual people are human beings and must be respected. They must have the same rights as heterosexuals do.

The part I loved the most was when Jake said that his friends had helped him when he had to face difficulties in his life and when he was criticized for his sexual orientationby prejudiced people.

I found it stimulating to get to have a real person talk to us about this aspect because it encourages us to speak to people who are in this situation so as to help them.

I think this experience made me feel closer to Jake.

I would like to say that you are very friendly and funny.
I would like to thank you for giving us your time and for sharing your experiences with us. I think it's a very beautiful occupation because you have to be able to understand, handle and play with words in order to translate a text. I like that. I like what translators do and the way they do it.

The part I loved the most was when Jake talked about his personnal relationship to different languages because I wanted to know more about how he lived everyday in so many languages. I also wanted to know what each language conveyed to him and the reasons why he had chosen to learn these particular languages rather than others. Plus, I was touched when Jake answered my questions and I loved that I got to ask these for real.

I found this experience very enriching because I could talk to a real native speaker of the English language. It made me practice my English; it was like a trainning. I would love to do it again.

It brought me knowledge because Jake shared his point of view on plurilingualism, he talked about his job and it was very interesting.

Hello Jake!
