One man has one great good true thing in his life ... you are naming it dirty!

Brick here shows his homophobia. He thinks that homosexuality is dirty or perverse, so he has to block out any element of homosexuality in his relationship with Skipper. Instead, he idealizes his friendship with Skipper as something great, good, and true.

The children in Cat are indeed monstrous, continually invading the scene. Against the beautiful, childless, tragic couple, the image of the family appears hilariously grotesque. For example, Mae and Gooper have spawned a litter of beasts fit for the county fair; and Mae is a "monster of fertility.

If she succeeds in doing this, she will be the only character that transforms lying into truth. For others, their lying keeps them deluded or deceived.

"Yes, all liars, all liars, all lying dying liars!" (pg 69)
Many characters in Cat conceal how they truly feel in order to keep their reputation and the facade of happiness alive. Brick conceals how he truly feels about Skipper because he feels it is disgusting and wrong. The entire Pollitt family conceals the truth about Big Daddy's condition because they want to keep him happy-however they learn keeping secrets and threading webs of lies only ends up getting themselves tangled in them too.

'It is gently and poetically haunted by a relationship that must have involved a tenderness which was uncommon'

This quote referring to the spirits of Straw and Ochello helps provides the underlying gay subtext of the play. A deep irony exists in the stark contrast between the former and current occupants of the room, Maggie and Brick's relationship is devoid of intimacy and it is inferred despite Brick's facade he feels emasculated (due to his close relationship with Skipper and symbolised by his cast). The quote also provides insight into homophobic paradigm of 50's as Straw and Ochello are later described as 'sisters' and 'fairies'.

Close friendship between two men was often looked upon with suspicion in the 50s. People often inferred that the two men must be gay, even if they weren't. However, Brick uses this truth as a way to deceive himself. By idealizing his relationship with Skipper, Brick refuses to look honestly at this friendship. And again, he refuses to acknowledge the social precedent that was set in his very bedroom by Straw and Ochello.

Big Daddy's violent and demeaning language suggests he views women as objects or pawns to manipulate and bend to his desires, driving the narrative that those who do not conform to society's expectations are at the mercy of the powerful. Brick, a likely homosexual, as well as the Pollitt women are objectified or manipulated by Big Daddy, who represents the authoritarian upper class of America.
