Objective: The objective of this game is to raise awareness about sustainability and encourage students to think about their personal choices and actions related to sustainability.

Materials: Cards or A4 sheets with sustainability statements

Instructions:

Form a Circle: Have all the students stand in a circle.

Explain the Game: Let the students know that they will be playing a game related to sustainability. The facilitator will read out statements or positions related to sustainability.

Reading Sustainability Statements: The facilitator begins by reading a sustainability statement or position. These statements can cover various aspects of sustainability, such as environmental, social, or economic sustainability. For example, the facilitator might say, "I always recycle paper and plastic."

Move to the Center: If a student in the circle agrees with the statement or position being read, they should take a step toward the center of the circle. In this case, if the student recycles paper and plastic, they would take a step toward the center.

Game Continues: Continue reading statements and encourage students to move closer to the center for each statement they agree with. The facilitator can read statements at a moderate pace to allow students time to respond.

End of the Game: The game stops when the first three students have reached the center. These three students are the winners.

Record the Names: Note down the names of the three winners.

Discussion: After the game, have a discussion with the class. Discuss the statements that were read, and ask the winners to share their thoughts on the game.

As part of the Erasmus+ program, we embarked on an enlightening journey to measure the ecological footprint of our students. Both the 9th-grade students in the Skills course and the participating students of the program engaged in this activity using a specially modified application by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). Unlike its English counterpart, this version is tailored to Greek conditions and is available in Greek.

We conducted this measurement at the beginning of the program and plan to repeat it at the end as an evaluation metric. While it's challenging to claim significant changes in student's views on sustainability within just a few months, these measurements provide valuable insights.

The initial results are quite revealing. The average ecological footprint for the 9th-grade students is 2,21 planets, indicating that if everyone lived like them, we would need more that two Earths to sustain our lifestyle. On the other hand, the average for the program participants is 1,73 planets.

These figures serve as a baseline for our ongoing efforts to raise awareness and promote sustainable practices among our students. We look forward to seeing how these numbers evolve as we continue our journey towards sustainability.

The grandeur and historical significance of the school left us in awe, providing a perfect start to our educational adventure. This visit was both enlightening and inspiring, giving us a deeper appreciation of the region's heritage.

Afterwards, we participated in icebreaker games with the students from the hosting organisation. These activities helped us bond quickly, breaking down any initial barriers and setting the stage for meaningful interactions througout the week.

In the afternoon, we took a short stroll through the vibrant Pera - Istiklal area, located in the heart of Istanbul. This bustling neighborhood, known for its historical architecture and lively atmosphere, gave us a glimpse into the city's unique blend of tradition and modernity. Our "green" eco-friendly hotel was also situated here, reflecting our commitment to sustainability even in our accomodation choices.

The combination of historical exploration, cultural exchange, and urban discovery made our first day in Istanbul incredibly enriching. They also filled out a questionnaire to deepen their understanding of local and sustainable food practices.

They discovered a variety of delicious foods at the market, as baklava, lokum and kebabs.

They visited Malatya Pazari at Hasircilar Cad No 11, a shop renowned for its high-quality dried fruits and nuts, particularly the famous dried apricots from Malatya. They also specialize in pastrami made from beef seasoned with a unique blend of spices, including clover, a Turkish specialty.

Their findings noted that local and sustainable foods included dolma and pide. Foods like baklava, kebabs, lokum etc., though popular and local, depend on their ingredients for sustainability.

The market offered a vast array of spices such as cinnamon, turmeric, cumin, paprika etc.; each of them plays a crucial role in Turkish cuisine, enhancing the flavors of both savory and sweet dishes.

They also took the opportunity to interview some shopkeepers about their selection process and customer preferences. Shopkeepers choose their products based on quality, sourcing from trusted suppliers and local producers. They emphasize the importance of freshness and authenticity in their selection. Customers often seek traditional Turkish products like spices, sweets and dried fruits, with a high demand for authentic flavors and high-quality ingredients. Shopkeepers provided insights on which spices complement which foods, noting that cumin and paprika are great for kebabs, cinnamon and cloves are perfect for desserts like baklava, and cardamon and ginger enhance both sweet and savory dishes.

We look forward to sharing more such enriching experiences as we continue our journey to promote sustainability and cultural appreciation.

Introduction to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals

On the second day, our trainer introduced us to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She showed us where to find the board game related to the SDGs, and we played it together. The game was an engaging and interactive way to learn about each goal. Some of our answers were quite surprising and led to lively discussions!

We engaged in thought-provoking conversations on questions such as what is happening to our planet, what is changing, and what we can do to make a difference. The game helped us see the interconnectedness of the goals and how achieving one can positively impact others.

Exploring Bloom's Taxonomy

Following this, our trainer gave us an in-depth analysis of Bloom's Taxonomy. This framework for categorizing educational goals aligns perfectly with the philosophy of our program and the training. By understanding Bloom's Taxonomy, we can better design and implement educational activities that promote higher-order thinking skills, crucial for addressing complex issues like sustainability and environmental protection.

We discussed how to apply Bloom's levels - Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analysing, Evaluating, and Creating - to our environmental education projects. This ensures our students not only gain knowledge but also develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, enabling them to become active participants in creating a sustainable future.

Our third day was dedicated to exploring the Futurium in Berlin, a museum designed to inspire and educate about sustainable futures. The visit aimed to raise our awareness of sustainability issues and stimulate discussions about the future.

The Futurium, also known as the "House of Futures", offers a glimpse into various future scenarios through its comprehensive and interactive exhibits. It features three main "thinking spaces" dedicated to Nature, Technology, and Humanity. These spaces present different visions and approaches to living harmoniously with the environment, leveraging technology, and fostering human development.

In the "Thinking Space: Nature", we encountered a vast sculpture that symbolizes the growth and potential of living in harmony with nature. This area explores how we can learn from natural systems and apply those lessons to create a sustainable future.

The "Thinking Space: Technology" showcased the potential of new technologies to shape our future cities, work environments, and consumption patterns. Using augmented reality and other digital tools, we engaged with animated future scenarios that highlighted innovative technological solutions.

The "Thinking Space: Humans" focused on how behavioural changes can positively impact our future. This space encouraged collaborative and creative thinking, offering various participatory stations where we could experiment with ideas and share our visions for the future.

In addition to these exhibits, the Futurium Lab provided hands-on experiences with emerging technologies like 3D printing and laser cutting. We had the opportunity to engage in activities that illustrated how these technologies might influence our daily lives and contribute to sustainability.

The museum also features an interactive forum for discussions and debates, which fosters dialogue among visitors from diverse backgrounds, including politics, science, and society. This space emphasized the importance of collective action and idea-sharing in shaping a sustainable future.

Our visit to the Futurium was not just educational but also inspirational, highlighting the interconnectedness of our actions and their impact on the planet. We left with a deeper understanding of the challenges ahead and a renewed commitment to contributing to a sustainable future.

Organizing Our Own PBL Activity

On the fifth and final day of our training, we were tasked with organizing our own activity using the principles of Project-Based Learning (PBL) that we had explored. Working collaboratively, we aimed to create an engaging educational experience for our students centred around the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Our plan included several components:

· Introduction to the 17 SDGs: We designed a session to introduce students to each of the 17 SDGs, explaining their significance and how they are interconnected.

· SDGs Board Game: We incorporated the SDGs board game we had played earlier in the week to make learning interactive and fun. This game served as an excellent tool to reinforce the information and provoke thoughtful discussions.

· Awareness Campaign: We organized a campaign to raise awareness about the SDGs within the school and the wider community. This included creating posters, digital content, and organizing events to spread the message.

· Deep Dive into a Specific Goal: Each group selected one SDG to focus on and develop a project around it. This deep dive allowed students to explore the chosen goal in greater detail, applying their knowledge and skills from various subjects.

Cross-Disciplinary Approach: To enrich the learning experience, we encouraged integrating different subjects into the projects. For example, if a group chose SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), they might a) explore renewable energy sources and conduce experiments to generate energy (science), b) study the global distribution of renewable resources and their impact on different regions (geography), c) analyse the economic benefits of renewable energy investments (economics) or/and d) create visual campaigns to promote clean energy solutions (art).

This approach not only highlighted the multifaceted nature of the SDGs but also demonstrated how various fields of study can contribute to sustainable development.

The collaborative effort in planning and executing this activity underscored the importance of teamwork, creativity, and practical application of knowledge. By working together, we developed a comprehensive and impactful project that we were excited to bring back to our students.

Conclusion of the Training

As this was the final day of our professional development program, we reflected on the knowledge and skills we had gained over the week. The experience was incredibly enriching and provided us with numerous ideas and strategies to implement in our schools.

Looking Forward to the Next Day

While our professional development activities concluded today, we looked forward to a day of cultural exploration and relaxation in Berlin tomorrow. This tourist day would offer us a chance to unwind and appreciate the vibrant history and culture of this remarkable city.

In our program, we introduced a unique and creative teaching technique to engage our students in environmental education: the Elfchen poem.

An Elfchen is a short poem consisting of 11 words, structured in a specific format to encourage concise and impactful expression. This poetic form is particularly effective for helping students focus their thoughts and emotions on a single topic. The structure is as follows:

1 word: a topic related to the environment

2 words: adjectives describing the first word

3 words: three words explaining the positive impact of the first word on us

4 words: our relationship with the first word

1 word: a feeling or emotion

By using the Elfchen technique, our students were able to reflect on the importance of preserving our planet in a simple yet profound way. This exercise not only enhanced their vocabulary and poetic skills but also deepened their understanding of environmental issues.

We encourage other educators to adopt this technique to inspire their students to think critically and creatively about sustainability and the environment

Together, we can make a difference!

The first step for the Green Balcony project began with a trip by a group of students

and teachers to Istanbul, Turkey, in collaboration with the Great School of the Nation

as part of the Erasmus+ program.

Given the time of year, November 2023, there were limited planting options for the

beautiful garden of the School. We decided to plant broad beans. This provided an

opportunity for students to learn about the unique characteristics of broad beans,

including their nutritional benefits and growth requirements.

Unique Characteristics of Broad Beans:

 Nutritional Benefits: Broad beans are rich in protein, fiber, vitamins, and

minerals. They are particularly high in folate and iron, making them a

nutritious addition to any diet.

 Growth Requirements: Broad beans are cool-season crops, preferring

temperatures between 4oC and 21oC. They need well-drained soil and full

sunlight to thrive.

 Allergy and G6PD Deficiency: Broad beans can cause allergic reactions in

some individuals. Additionally, they can trigger a condition called favism in

people with G6PD deficiency, a genetic disorder that affects red blood cells.

One of our students has this condition, which made the learning experience

even more relevant and educational.

At the end of January, we received exciting news: photos of the growing broad beans

were sent to us by Ms. Karia Kayadelen, the communication officer and head of the

School's team of educators who welcomed us.

This experience not only enriched our knowledge about sustainable gardening but

also strengthened our international cooperation and understanding. We look

forward to more updates and continued growth, both in our plants and our

collaboration!

Students were given the necessary instructions on how to compost, and

detailed information was posted on the bulletin board. The nutrient-rich compost significantly

improved the growth and health of our plants, demonstrating the practical benefits

of composting and sustainability.

This hands-on experience with composting not only provided valuable knowledge

about waste management and soil health but also empowered students to actively

contribute to our school 's green initiatives.

We look forward to seeing more positive outcomes from our Green Balcony project

and continuing our journey toward a sustainable future!

As part of the Erasmus program, students and teachers decided to create our own green balcony where we plant seasonal vegetables that we will use in our sustainable recipes. Initially, each student individually started composting on their own balcony. This way, students realized through hands-on experience how much waste we can reduce by composting our organic waste.

Achievements:

 Environmental Awareness: Students learned about sustainable practices and

the importance of green spaces in urban environments.

Enhance Learning: The project provided a hands-on educational experience

integrating biology, ecology, and environmental science.

 Community Building: The project fostered a sense of responsibility and

teamwork among students as they worked together on the garden or/and

balconies projects.

 Well-being Improvement: The green spaces created enhanced the school

environment and promoted mental and physical well-being.

Methodology:

1. Planning and Design: Students designed the layout of the school garden

or/and green balconies, considering factors like plant selection, space

optimization, and sustainability.

2. Implementation: With guidance from teachers and experts, students

prepared the garden and balcony spaces, planted seeds, and installed

necessary infrastructure.

3. Maintenance: Regular maintenance tasks were assigned to students,

ensuring they learned the importance of ongoing care and the lifecycle of

plants.

4. Evaluation: Periodic assessments were conducted to evaluate the success of

the project, including plant growth, student engagement, and the impact on

the school environment.

Each student using his compost, grew plants on the balcony of their house with a free choice of fruit and vegetables as long as they are seasonal.

At the end of May, teachers and students, also, gathered on our school balcony and planted seasonal vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, parsley, peppers, and strawberries. The students added soil and compost in a 1:1 ratio to the pots and then planted the vegetables. They were also met with a wonderful surprise from Ms. Chatzopoulou, who used two water bottles, turned them into pots by painting them blue, and placed a label with the program's name on them.

The result of this activity rewarded our efforts, and we can't wait to taste the fruits of our green balcony!
