Poetry Elements

Kenning is commonly seen throughout the text to avoid the repetitive use of the character names. Kenning is seen the most when referring to Grendel, referring to him as, "That shepherd of evil, guardian of crime" (309). "The mighty protector of all men" (350) refers to Beowulf and his widely believed heroism. Grendel's mother is referenced with "The mighty water witch" (447)

Alliteration is the repetitive use if a consonant sound at the beginning of a word. This element is used even more than kenning. "...swung his sword" is an example of the consonant sound. The author typically uses alliteration with two words, to provide a section of rhythm to keep the reader's interest. "The hammered links held" (478) is another example of this element.

The literary device, Caesura, is also used heavily in the text. Caesura is a break or pause in a line of text. The use of commas, colons, and periods, all signify pauses. "From Beowulf, flee back to his marsh and hide there:..." (315) is an example of caesura being used to create rhythmic pauses and breaks to keep interest. Both commas and colons are used in this example. The two lines, "The aisles the battle swept , angry / And wild. Herot trembled, wonderfully" (328-329) show that punctuation is used to pause and separate the lines for emphasis on the descriptive language.

Rachel Smith
