“A good leader takes a little more than his share of the blame, a little less than his share of the credit.”
Arnold H. Glasow

Student leaders must have the attribute of being selfless when it comes to teaching others and giving credit when it's due. In order to have selflessness in a student leader, one must unconsciously be willing to do the things necessary for everyone to equally excel. They lead other students to achieve their goals while achieving theirs too. Student leaders give a little more push towards others under them first before they focus on themselves. They give sacrificially without thought.

Moreover, simple acts of kindness give selflessness toward others. These simple acts could enhance their performance and well-being throughout the day.

Example:
When a new member of your team is struggling with a task, a student leader who has the qualities of selflessness would instantly help them without thought. Additionally, student leaders would encourage them and take the time to mentor them. They are sacrificially giving their time just for the new member to keep up and achieve his goals.

Optimism is essential to achievement and it is also the foundation of courage and true progress.
Nicholas M. Butler

Being an optimistic student leader "fuels" your goals as a team. If a student leader is optimistic, they are quickly able to influence members of the group. In addition, being optimistic could lead to being more productive as it shows a view or mentality that is most favorable.

Example:
If the members are pessimistic about their output as a team, the optimistic student leader must show the bright sides of their output, telling them why their outputs stands out the most against others.

"Not only will you be held accountable for the things you do, but you will be held responsible for the very thoughts you think."
Karl G. Maeser

Student leaders must not blame others for their mistakes as they are the ones who instructed the members to do tasks. They must willingly accept their own mistakes and those of others. Nevertheless, student leaders must address their mistakes and fix them on the table. They must discuss what went wrong so there will be no conflicts.

Example:
If a teacher asks why the submission is wrong in format and font size, the student leader should take responsibility for what went wrong on behalf of the group, because he or she must be the one to finalize and check the output to be submitted. He or she must not blame the person who was delegated to that part.

“Now is no time to think of what you do not have. Think of what you can do with what there is.”
Ernest Hemingway

A resourceful student leader must often think out of the box. They must improvise and quickly adapt. Being a resourceful student leader should see things that other members do not see as a "tool" that may help them in the task given to them. On top of that, a resourceful student leader must quickly find and cope with the situations given to them while doing their job right. They must see opportunity in a situation where others seem that there is none.

Example:
If a projector is broken inside the classroom, and the student leader sees that most or all of the people in the classroom have laptops, a student leader will give the pdf to their classmates so they can continue their presentation.

In this scenario, a good leader should be someone who can manage the people around them, while also motivating them to work together and achieve great things. They should possess skills of communication, conflict resolution, and concrete skills at the task at hand.

Example:
There is a singing competition at school, and the whole class is required to participate, a student leader should volunteer to take control of the project. They should mitigate any conflict of the class, communicate their ideas well, and lastly know how to organize the class and delegate so the performance can be a success.

Challenges are not the issue. It’s how we respond to them that matters
Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner

A student leader should be able to adapt well to any challenge laid before them; they are versatile and quick-witted. Moreover, a good leader is full of energy and new and exciting ideas. Not only do they create meaningful outputs, but they also then create profound journeys with their team.

Example:
The teacher assigns the student leader to be in charge of a group in making a science fair project. Even though they aren’t the best in the subject, the student leader fears not, and puts in the time and effort to research reasonable science experiments to be done by the group. They were unafraid of the challenge and used their weakness as a motivation to have a good output.

Leadership is the art of giving people a platform for spreading ideas that work.
Seth Godin

Student-leaders are open-minded, so they are able to listen to the ideas of others and make good judgement calls on which ones will work best for their team. They are a man of the people; they should push others to give their best; they listen carefully and consider others' opinions before making decisions on whether something is right or wrong for everyone involved - this way they can make informed decisions based on what's best for everyone involved rather than just one person's opinion alone.

Example:
The student leader is tasked to create a school play to be presented in the auditorium. In this scenario, they made the script for the play and are in charge of the creative direction. Your classmates, the characters of the play, have ideas on how to give their character more depth and humanity. A student leader doesn’t shy away from those ideas and puts them in their play because they are actually useful in making the output better.

Pure pragmatism can’t imagine a bold future. Pure idealism can’t get anything done. It is the delicate blend of both that drives innovation.
Simon Sinek

Some people might argue that pragmatism and idealism are polar opposites of one another, and having one is at the expense of the latter. That is simply untrue, A true leader is a mix of practicality and dreaminess. A student leader should see the realities/limitations of their circumstances all while seeing the destination (goal and vision.) They do not use pragmatism as a weakness but really as a component of their strategy in moving forward.

Example:
A student leader is in the student council for this year’s sportsfest. Many of their peers vote to have a full on scale amusement park inside the school - which is unrealistic. So the student leader then pitches a solid idea of smaller scale rides, with booths and food. The compromise is applauded by the members and by the school themselves since it is within the allotted budget.
