The living conditions were very bad, they were large families living in tiny and semi-detached houses.
Charles Dickens is one of the authors that portrays this time and the people who lived there. 
Hard times is set in a fictional industrial town, called Coketown, somewhere in the north of England in the mid-1800s.  The town is dirty and noisy, and the life of the people working in the factories is hard. Mr.Gradgrind, who is the local MP, represents the people of Cocketown in Parliament. He has set up a school in the town and is very proud of its work. 
From the part we read, we realized that school in this days is  very different from that time, not everyone had access to school, the rules were strong and there were many children in the same class. Is a school were children have the same rights as adults. In it all classes are optional, students can choose those they want to attend and those they don´t want.
Here children decide for themselves their own future.
