Year 5 have all been given a spider plant or poppy seed to take home and look after. We are going to bring the plants back into school in the summer term to see how the plants have changed...

STEM Event- Online with the RAF

We learnt what it meant to work in STEM by designing and creating our own gliders. We use speed, distance and time to measure how effective our gliders were. We had a great time!

Forces - friction

We looked at what friction is and created an experiment to see how much friction is created on different surfaces.

19/1/2026 - Forces - air resistance

We explored what it was like to run in different ways: normally, with a giant piece of card in front of us, with our coats wide open, and whilst holding a large piece of material. It was much easier to run without holding anything as we were more streamlined.

20/1/2026 - Water resistance

We explored how surface area affects water resistance. We shaped playdoh into spheres, sausages and "flat" and dropped them into water and timed how long it took for the object to sink. All of the objects were 20g to ensure it was a fair test. We repeated our results 3 times to ensure accuracy. We discovered that the larger the surface area, the more water resistance there is and the slower the object will sink.

We made our own levers and pulleys to see whether it made it easier to lift things.

4/2/26 - Forces

We have finished our forces topic now and decided to explore forces in real life and in the toys that we use. We looked at: gears, friction, magnetism and even centripetal force! We created ramps with different surface types and explored how the cars moved across different surfaces. We talked about how air resistance affected the different toys used.

We talked about the different properties materials might have and paired them up with their opposite. We tested materials to see how rigid they were, whether they were transparent, magnetic, or a conductor of electricity. We talked about what materials would be suitable to make objects.

Soluble and insoluble materials

We explored whether solids dissolved in liquids and whether they could be recovered.

We used yesterday’s salt water and discussed how to separate the salt from the water. We used oil burners to evaporate the water from the mixture and it worked!

Caterpillars!

We have 5 caterpillars in class. This links to our Science topic from Autumn where we learnt about the life cycles of different animals. We will watch them grow and see how they change.

Update 10/3/2026

Our caterpillars are getting much bigger now. In the next 7 days, they should attach to the top of the cup and become chrysalides.

Update 16/3/2026

Our caterpillars are absolutely huge now! It won’t be long before they create their cocoons.

Update 18/3/2026

One of the caterpillars has already started to create a cocoon and the others are in their ‘L’ shape at the top of the cup.

Update 23/3/2026

The caterpillars have been moved to the butterfly net. Unfortunately, one did not survive the transformation. We are hoping the other 4 will be fine.

We have been exploring irreversible changes through burning. We looked at the new materials created and discussed whether we could get the paper back.

We created “ice cream” using ice, milk and salt - we definitely did not eat it. We saw the milk turn to a solid and then watched it melt again.

We explored what happens when you mix bicarbonate of soda with vinegar. We observed a fizzing reaction and the balloons on top of the bottle inflated because a gas had been produced - carbon dioxide.
