Tom and Huck Finn were the witneses of a serious murder caused by Injun Joe, which made Tom shiver with fear. Becky gets mad with Tom for a very particular reason: she believes Tom doesn't like her nor cares for her anymore, so she attempts for revenge by rummaging through the teacher's belongings, starting with his notebook. She inadvertently tore one of the pages, and fear and embarrass grew over her. She didn't want to be punished! Tom took notice of this and tried to take the blame for Becky, as he clearly didn't want to see her get sad. He was worried about her... But thankful that she didn't get scolded! How.. strangely kind for a mischievous kid.

Tom decides to go to an island. The three friends went and had fun playing in the water, acting like pirates. Days later, the three friends are sad for not seeing their mothers. Then, at night, Tom goes home in one arm and sees his aunt and a friend's mother. The aunt falls asleep. Tom puts a few words on a piece of wood, gives her a kiss on the forehead, and goes back to the island. Later that day, Tom told his friends to go home. Chapter 20

In this chapter, Mr. Dobbins discovers thhe torn page and interrogates his students to find out who did it.

When he reaches Becky, Tom bravely stands up and confesses that he tore the page, even tought it was Becky’s action.

Becky is deeply moved by Tom’s selfess act of taking the blame for her, and she later confesses to him the truth about who actually spilled ink on his spelling book.

Chapter 25

In this chapter, Tom tells Huck about the "rules" of treasure hunting: that treasure is often hidden under dead trees, haunted houses, or at places where the shadow of a tree limb falls at midnight.

They dig around a base of dead-limbed but find nothing. Tom realizes they may be digging in the wrong spot and that the must time their digging with the shadow at midnight.

The chapter ends with the boys heading home through the woods, uneasy but resolved to try again.

Chapter 9: Tom and his friends had been playing at being pirates when Tom got home. His grandmother was very worried and angry. Tom felt very bad about it and then told her everything. Even though he had lied about his dream, his grandmother was relieved. However, when he went to tell to Aunt Polly, he realized that Tom had lied to her and went with him to scold him. Tom felt bad about that and apologized to his grandmother again, although his grandmother at least felt happy because he had left her a note on a piece of wood.

Becky felt angry with Tom, especially when she saw him talking to Amy, and Becky decided to have a picnic and did not invite Tom and Amy. The next day, Becky was hoping that Tom would say something about the picnic, but Tom didn't say anything, which made Becky even angrier. She was planning another revenge but realized that Alfred was spilling ink in Tom's book. She planned to tell Tom but then changed her mind. Thanks to that, Tom could be punished for spilling ink in his book. Upon returning to the classroom, Becky noticed that Mr. Dobbins had left a key on her desk. There were rumors that in the drawer of his desk there was a book that he would take out when there were no students, but nobody knew what it was, so Becky opened the drawer and took out the book. It was an anatomy book. She saw two human figures, then noticed a shadow approaching, got scared, and accidentally tore a page from the book. Then she realized it was Tom! and thought that because of that, Becky was going to be punished, but later when the teacher arrived and saw the torn page, he started asking student by student who it had been, and Becky was about to say it was her, but Tom said it was him so that Becky wouldn't be punished. Although they had to punish Tom, Becky felt very grateful to him and also felt bad for what she had done before.

That will make trouble for Tom, but it is clear for Becky to see his actions. This is an important moment for the two and the bond is made even stronger. In Chapter 25, at night Tom and Huck do a treasure hunt. They take food, a lantern, a spade to a haunted house. It is the feeling of fear and excitement that they experience at the same time. While hiding, they see two men enter. The boys see and recognize Injun Joe. They boys are stunned as Injun Joe gets a treasure of gold coins. They are in shock. The boys are terrified and will do nothing. They will get the treasure later as the boys are sure.

In the next chapter, Tom was like a hero on Petesbourg, Missouri, he wanted to be free from Becky, and she wanted that too, but she couldn't. Later, Becky was asking other kids to come to a picnic that her mom was doing, all of that because she wanted to get Tom's attention. A few hours later, she saw Alfred spilling ink on Tom's spelling book, she didn't tell on Alfred to get revenge from Tom. As Becky went to the classroom, she saw a key, opened the drawer and took Mr. Dobbins's book and accidentally ripped a page because Tom's shadow appeared. In spelling class, Tom was whipped because of the ink spilled on his book, when Mr. Dobbins put the students to read, he saw the ripped page on his book, and was asking each student about it, and when it was Becky's turn, Tom shouted ''i did it'', and Tom was whipped again.
