Cebu Island is known to be the oldest settlement strongly influenced by the Spaniards.

On April 7, 1521, a Portuguese explorer named Ferdinand Magellan arrived in Cebu. He was welcomed by the king of Cebu, Rajah Humabon along with other natives. On April 27, 1565, another Spanish explorer, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and a friar Andres de Urdaneta landed on Cebu and founded the first Spanish settlement and started the Catholic mission which they spread across the Philippine archipelago. At the end of the Spanish-American War, the signing of the Treaty of Paris gave the rights and properties of Cebu along with the rest of the Philippine islands to the United States which lasted up until the start of the Commonwealth Era (1935-1946). Cebu’s transfer to the Commonwealth government was signed by Luis Flores, however, there were still a few personalities who resisted this change namely, Gen. Arcadio Maxilom and Juan Climaco and others. Cebu was officially established as a city on February 24, 1937.
