In my review of the NSBA website, I noticed a great deal of attention surrounding the issue of the School-To-Prison Pipeline. Many intercity students are affected by the disciplinary actions schools hand out.

The second major issue I took note of was affordable college. Many students in the middle to low income class are directly affected by this. It plays a role on their choice for their future.

In my review of the NSBA website, there was a lot of discussion on Academic Standards. The NSBA discussed the unity and rigor needed across schools in the US. Common core and career readiness was at the forefront of the conversation.

Another issue that was discussed on this website was school safety and security. Controversy surrounds the safety of school students and the NSBA takes about ways to improve school safety. All students and faculty are impacted by this.

After my exploration of legal and ethical issues in the field of Guidance and Counseling, I am most interested in exploring what schools are doing to address the School-To-Prison Pipeline. This is interesting to me because I serve at a school full of minorities who are affected by this the most. I want them to have fair chances at succeeding in their future.

What I Learned About the School-To-Prison Pipeline in High Schools

The school-to-prison pipeline is a zero-tolerance policy created by schools to enforce appropriate behavior. “Policies that encourage police presence at schools, harsh tactics including physical restraint, and automatic punishments that result in suspensions and out-of-class time (Marilyn, 2013).” Public schools are pushing minorities and special education students at a much higher rate than that of Caucasian students.

Currently, the government and schools are working to solve this problem. There have been many ideas presented that some districts are trying to enforce. One of the major ideas that is being implemented across the board is to use positive reinforcement. Students will be encouraged to behave by the acknowledgment their possible behavior receives. This doesn’t always have to be treats. Another implementation that some districts are doing is keeping reports. They keep track of how many students are being punished, who is being punished, and how they are being punished. This helps school lower the amount of arrested that are being made in addition to minimizing the restraint of students.

As a counselor, I would need to be knowledgeable on how discipline is being handle in the school. Students who are frequent behavior problems are seen by counselors often. There is usually another problem that causes the misbehavior. It is important for me to understand the common problems associated with negative behavior. Additionally, I would need to be knowledgeable on the policies concerning discrimination. I would need to know what actions I should take and how to help prevent students from being discriminated against. I would need to understand how to teach staff new ways to handle behavior as well as cultural differences that could cause a miscommunication between the student and teacher.
