We can see an old woman looking out the window. She seems alone and depressed.

I choose this picture because it represents many society's expectations.
One of the main stereotype about elderly persons are that they are lonely. But they aren't. If you do some researches, you can find many studies that proves that the older persons are not the most lonely. Society expects also the older people to stay inside, to be locked up. But I disagree, when you are older, you go outside, you go for a walk, you enjoy the world... because you can't stay alone in your home, watching news, it's boring. The woman doesn't smile, and it illustrates the society's idea that the seniors aren't happy, but I think (and hope) that most of the older people are happy. I think that they are enjoying their life, maybe in a different way that when they were younger (maybe they don't party, ...) but still enjoying.

Anna Langlois--André
2ndJ

This is the tipic picure of the eldery person represent by the society, the seniors are obligatory "sad" , they "do nothings at the exeption to watch TV" , they"do not sport" because it's" hard "for they "it's for this they stay at home" for minim the effort for not tired. For continued the seniors "don't have style" and they "neglige this" they think "the pretty clothes are not forthey because they are so old" for this and they think "that is for the young to be have a good clothing" but every words of the society are fals !
Here we can see a great stereotype about the elderly person, we are led to believe that the elderly listen to very old music that is boring and not dynamic so that they have a very old musical culture But this is false we can prove it by this photo which shows an elderly person named Mami Rock, he is a very famous person in England she made great concerts of electro music for the young but also for the old people, she was loved by all and dedicated her life to electro music Unfortunately, she passed away in 2014, but by her very existence, she has shown an entire society that stereotypes about the elderly are false and, moreover, we can see that she is having fun and that she is not forcing herself !

To grow old... In fact I think that we should not confuse stereotypes and reality, yes older people are not boring even less annoying, on the contrary some take care of a maximum and enjoy their life but I think it is not comparable to youth. After 50 years, our body ages and there’s nothing we can do about it and I really don’t want it to happen to me then to grow up to be an adult maybe but to be an elderly person, non-merci and I do not rely on stereotypes but experiments carried out seriously by professionals .

These things means also choices and changes, and changes are terrifying. But do we really have a choice ?

So, I don't know how I feel about growing up.

Personally, I am not afraid of becoming an elderly person because when you get older your face is the line of your life and I think that is not regrettable because I think it is a reflection of how you have lived. But before becoming a senior you grow up, and that scared me, because to become an adult you have to choose a job but when you're young it's not easy and afterwards when you have your job you earn a salary but it can't be enough and yo can have financial problems and that's a little scary. I think studies are difficult and it's my main source of fear to grow up because I'm afraid of not being successful and suddenly not doing what I want.

Caen--Stéphant Léa

I think this picture is a stereotype of the elderly because of the piece which is old style. We can see also this phone with big keys, it's an older style. This person is looking at a picture frame, with a sad face. Old people don't have to be seen as sad people, sitting on a couch, doing nothing and staring at a frame. It's a stereotype because that is not the reality of everyone at this age.
Serbini Léane

Like in this picture: waking up early in the morning, alone because there husband is gone, eating, watching tv, without talking to anybody. I think It can be true and in this case it's really sad but I think eldely people can have fun and make friends, for exemple my grandfather is alone but sometimes he go to the bar and talks to people. I think it's really important to support lonely eldely people and talk to them because, often, there children and grandchildren are rarely with them, they are working or studying.

According to stereotypes, the grandparents don't live in the city and have a wonderful and huge garden. The second meaning of growing up is to be an adult, and I don't think I'm ready for that, I see were I would like to go and I say to myself : "stop dreaming, people do wonderful things and not you" I see all the competitive examinations I have to do to be what I want and I think it will be complicated.
For getting older, I want to be older and not at the same time, I want to be adult for study what I love, to be independant, to travel, to do the raid amazone with my best friend, to do violin...but at the same time, I know that I will lose people of my family, my grandparents, and after my parents and maybe my brothers, my friends...I lose someone this year, I don't want to revive this. I want to have childrens too. but after my studies, but they can last for seven years...people say to live at full speed and after to slow down, to take our time...

I think that grow up and getting older scared people because they think of the negative aspects. When you grow up, you become more wise, and you ripen. It's important too see that when you become older you take responsabilities but also liberty, you are free to do what you want. Growing up gives you the chance to realize your dreams, to live the life you want to live. Even if you become old, that's not a problem, because everyone is thinking about the fact that you can't look young like when you were 20 years old but it doesn't matter because your mind is more developped. The experience that the life gives you can help you to become an happy person. You have to enjoy your life when you are young and you also don't have to focus on the age, it's just a number and you can stay young in your mind. Growing up can give us happiness, we just have to take it easy and enjoy the life, so getting older don't scared me. I also think that when you're old, you are at a point of your life when you have accumulated a lot of things, and you need to transmit all your knownledge to the new generation that will take place after us.

Louis Bouchard

Personally, I think growing old and growing up are two different things because an old person is not necessarily tall and a tall person is not necessarily old and that is as much physically as it is mentally.
In short, I think it's when we get older that we grow up because the older we get, the more mature we become and that we also grow physically, I also think that getting older is a good thing because when we get older I find that we see the world differently and we also sometimes change our behavior and more often our habits for example we have more time to take care of our garden ... In addition, there is retirement when we are old. which sometimes allows you to go on a trip or other. Then I know that when we get older we tend to have wrinkles and to be less physically attractive, but that's life and you have to live with it, for me it's "the marks of life". I also find that growing up is a good thing because it allows us to be taken seriously by adults because we are mature and we are physically tall. I also love growing up because this is the time when there is the most physical change as our muscles develop, our voice changes for boys ...
In conclusion, I think growing up and getting old are two different things, but they are related.

It's an occasion for many of them to leave their usual environment and meet new people, admire and photograph new landscapes : they can keep unforgettable memories ! It's like a second youth and seniors who are no longer able to travel enjoy their lives in many other ways. On this picture, we can see an elderly couple who carries a very happy and fulfilled look on their face. They simply walk on the sand of a beach, enjoy the moment, look at each other with passion and will soon walk on a beach of another continent ! Stereotypes like : "they only read and do crosswords, just boring things" often prove false. Actually, these people are full of happiness and ambition, each of them is dynamic in its own way!

For me, growing up is a lot of responsibility to take on, autonomy to acquire, compromises to make and all those adult things that cause a lot of stress ... Sometimes, I say to myself that I would rather be 16 all my life, it would be more obvious. But is life made to be simple ? I don’t think so ! I just hope to be well prepared before I go to the post-high school world. For me, getting older is a sign of maturity and experience. To become a free, stable, autonomous, powerful, responsible person but above all a happy one. On the one part, growing old scares me a liitle bit because life is too short to realize all my dreams and growing old is also often synonymous with health problems... On the other part, I know that growing up will allow me to become every day the best version of me. It’s funny to think that one day, I’ll be in my mother’s place, then my grandmother’s. However, I will not cease to keep my one and only goal : be happy and share this happiness. John Lennon said, "When I was a kid, my mother told me that happiness is the key to life. At school, when I was asked to write what I wanted to be later, I said happy. They told me I didn’t understand the question, I told them they didn’t understand life".

For my grandmother being old isn’t the best thing happened in her life, because with the time she developed some diseases like diabetes, and she is more fragile than before like actually she can’t use her left arm without hurting herself. It’s hard for her because she take care of children, so the pain doesn’t help her. If she get holder that mean the people she likes also age, and many members of her family and her husband died, and she’s very sad some times when she remembered the good memories with those people. But aging isn’t only a bad thing for her, like she meet her grandchildren and she love her. She isn’t the most active elderly person that exist but she continue to cook, take care of her garden, do her shopping, and yes sometime she need some help but when me or anyone in my family go help her she had more company, because her dog isn’t very talkative. My grandmother is not very alone because there is almost always someone in her house. She don’t need to be under tutelage so that make her life easier, she steal an independent woman.

HALLUIN Sylvain

Getting older is one of the things that scares me the most because getting older isn't just about having wrinkles, it's also getting closer to death. Nevertheless, this interview with my grandmother made me change my opinion and my way of seeing things.
My grandmother working all her life. Coming from a fairly poor background, she had to work very early to get out of it but she always wanted to paint. It was her dream that she had never been able or had the time to realize. But when she was retired, she had the time and began to paint. She says that getting old is one of the best things that ever happened to her and her life of an elderly person is one of the best parts of her life. Because even though old age have brought her health problems, it's have also allowed her to do what makes her the happiest: painting. Furthermore, she said to me that no day is the same as when she worked and that she takes advantage of each day to discover everything she has not yet discovered, to read everything she has not yet read, or to see everything which she never could. So the days in my grandmother's life are never the same but if there's one thing she does all the time it's taking care of her family. Her senior life is never boring and especially not sad because she promised herself to enjoy every moment and to paint as much as she can

Finally, I will say that we can’t recount and trivialize the life of an elderly person. Everyone is not the same and all lives are different but one thing is sure my grandmother made me understand that no matter our age or what stage of your life you are, you have to realize your dream!
Lamotte Lilia 2ndJ

First of all I think that we should not confuse growing up and aging, as many children we all want to grow up, be an adult, have a car,.. On the other hand, after a certain age about 50 years we are in a pass where we are already aging the more we see our retirement approaching we realize the number of candles for birthdays.Arriving at this age is the opposite it is a return to childhood that we want....

To learn more about the life of elderly person, I decided to interview my grandmother. She told me that for her, the most important thing in life was her children and grandchildren. For those who don’t have any she feels sorry for them because she thinks that during most of your life it’s okay not have children but when you get really old it’s get sad. During her life she was always strict with anything, she wanted everything to be perfect but with the time she learns to stop worrying about the details and to be more peaceful. She is the kind of person that doesn’t think you get happier when you’re ageing but you learn what is the most important and you try to make the most of those things while you still can. I asked her if she was feeling lonely, recording to the stereotypes but she wasn’t, she has her husband, her children that are living just next to her with her grandchildren which is rare and she is grateful for it. She even said « I got the chance to go annoyed them whenever I want ». Still recording to the stereotypes, I then asked her if she was hanging out sometimes, she told me that before covid, she was always out, visiting her uncles and aunts. She was also participating to a gymnastic class organized by her city. In the city, a lot of things are organized for the seniors, for example, they had organized a meeting between the senior of the city every week for them to talk together. She decided to try this but she didn’t felt like she was belonging to this activity because the others were too old for her so she stop going to it. For her future, she doesn’t want to go in a retirement house because she wouldn’t feel free. But when she will no longer have the possibility to take care of her house she will move in a smaller one or maybe in a home housing for elderly people. There, she will still be free to do anything like if she was in her own house but a canteen would be at her disposal and if she ever have a problem someone would be there to help her.

Axelle Malherbe

To begin with, know that my great-grandmother's name is Mireille, that she is 83 years old and that she lives with Rogert, my great-grandfather who is 90 years old. They still live in their first home where they raised my grandmother and her siblings. But a nurse often visits them to check on their health.
Then she started to tell me about her daily life. She usually gets up around 8 a.m. and my grandfather gets up around 6 or 7 a.m. Rogert waits for Mireille to wake up, he goes to tinker in the garage or he will take care of his garden, his garden is a bit like his treasure and he takes care of it several hours a day despite his age. Then, when my grandmother wakes up, they have lunch together. Then they take care of it until 11 a.m. This is when my great-grandmother how to prepare the meal. Then they eat around 12:30 p.m. Then, after eating, they will either go for a walk or both take care of the garden. At the end of the day around 6 p.m. Mireille prepares dinner and they eat around 7 p.m. then they watch a movie and go to bed around 10 p.m. or 11 p.m.

They never get bored telling me about my grandmother even if they are retired. They have something to do all the time: cleaning, shopping etc.. and it doesn’t bother them. Also, every month they have fun changing or buying new items for their home. The only problem is the virus says my grandfather is at risk because of this disease, they can no longer go out as before and see their grandson less. To cheer them up, I sometimes go to eat at home paying attention of course (barrier gestures) because they do not live far from my high school, I am happy when I see them and they too:)!

I chose to interviewed my grandmother, and for her, retirement is fun. It's only been a couple of month since she is really in retirement. Even if my grandfather isn't in retirement yet, she never gets bored. She always find a way to have fun.

I asked her about a typical day in her life and that was what she told me :
First, she always read the news on her pad. Then she prepared herself to go in bicycle at the market . After eating, she does yoga, followed by a session of relaxation. Then, she goes on a walk on the beach and if it's raining, she read. During the evening, she usually watch Netflix.

My grandmother entertained herself with activities (like boardgames, books, series, ...) and sports. She also should have start to take classes, at a university for seniors, to improve her english and to do more sport. Also, she loves to go shopping.

Another thing really important in her life is travelling. She travels a lot and far away; she should have been in Corea in October (but ...Covid-19), she also traveled in Thailand, Laos, and now she's skiing.

She said to me that one of the best thing in retirement is that she can see her family often and can take care of her grandchildren.

I think that my grandmother isn't a grandmother that we find in the society's expectations. She can cook but easy recipe, she doesn't stay at home, she needs to move and she isn't boring, she is always laughing.

When I ask her a word to define the retirement, she said "coolitude". I think this word shows the type of life that she is living.
Anna Langlois--André

Can you summerize your everyday life ?

Everyday when I get up I already know what I’m going to do. I have many projects and I automatically plane my days. I begin doing the homework to get it out of the way. Then, I read aloud russian texts for entertaining , I go out to do a bit of shopping, I cook and I do like cooking. I teach calculation students with intellectual disability, I advise many associations, schools about specialized pedagogy, everywhere in France and aboard . I like to take out for a walk, or for a drive to seaside. I ‘m very happy when I see my children and grand children but they don’t visit us nearly often enough because they are living too far away .

How do you feel to getting older ?
It’s difficult to explain because I know I’m getting older but in my mind I feel young , I’m young at heart. So I always get pleasure when my grand children call me « Bonne Maman ». I say to myself « oh yes I’m a grand mother » and it’s amazing. And I continue to forget I getting older.

Are you happy generaly ?
Yes I’m generaly happy and I don’t have the time to be sad. When there are problems I prefer research how to solve them.

With this interview of my grandma, i learn that grandparents are happy to be what they are, to take care of their grandchildrens. That shows that when you are old, you take the time to do what you want and what you love, slowly, to be quiet after a lot of years working. With this interview, i want to see my grandmother and hug her, i haven't see her and my grandfather since four months, i hope i will see them soon...

my grand father told me that being old is an important part of our life, it’s when start to take a step back on what we created and learned in our life. Being old is not the funniest part of his life, he lived the best moments of his life during his youth but he don’t regret this part because he changed his interest records and grown.

Now he lives a routine in his house : he passes the time by watching tv, reading, meet people at the bar or sometimes fishing. But it’s complicated for him because he’s most of the alone.

with this interview, I learned that the elderly and even more those who are retired, are bored because they can no longer practice their daily activities or at least with restrictions such as for example walking or going to the market etc.My grandmother, for example, no longer goes to see her friends. She can no longer see those around her like her children or grandchildren. They can no longer also go on vacation. They feel lonely.

When you speak about the fact of getting older, you need to speak about the retirement. When you become older, you stop working, so obviously your rhythm of life will radically change. When you don’t work, you leave the active life and you become freer to do what you want. So when you are getting older you can do things that you couldn’t do if you work. It’s the same thing when you have children, when you are getting older, your children become older too and they start their own lives. So when you are in retirement and when your children aren’t in the house anymore you can take time for you. For this reason, a lot of old persons travel when they become older. But of course, the family is very important for an old person, and this is a pleasure to see your children and your grand-children growing up. In summary, I learn that the rhythm of life of an old person is very different from our and getting older is often the occasion to do things we can’t do because we are in an active life like to take more time for your hobbies or to travel.

I asked my grand-parents Daniel and Beatrice, my mother's parents, who are 75 years old and who live in the department of Vendee.
Beyond the normal process of the course of life, retirement doesn't cause any anxiety concerning them. But getting older it's the opportunity to distance themselves from the constraints of work, from the professional relationships which they still have today, for some. It's to think about the education passed on their children : Olivia (my aunt) and Romane (my mother) : did it allow them to build themselves psycho-emotionally/socially ?
It's still to hope to have gained maturity on a lot of subjects such as politics for example.
For almost 15 years of retirement, their days were first devoted to their new place of life (decoration, development...) then know their environment (history, local habits, relationship mode...). To integrate and understand into the new social situation, they have registered in associations : my grandmother in a creative club and a choir ; my grandfather in a local press correspondent for Ouest-France newspaper and as a director in a socio-cultural center, which led him to become a municipal advisor.
They also take time for themselves, for their couple with long walks by the sea, cycling, swim at the pool, going to the cinema...
Even though they are retired, they never stop ! Covid-19 disrupted all their activities and my grandmother's operations led them to live differently, but they aren't bored !
They find that there are stereotypes about older people, everywhere and not just for older people. By their professional activity, they have often been led to create/recreate the link between members of the same family and their environment. A problem often linked to trivialities, sometimes to real difficulties. One could summarize this judgement/denigration of others by : "In my time/period..." and "You can't understand, you're too old...". Moreover, confinement/quarantine doesn't help this situation because health solutions reinforce difference between generations in terms of attention, care...
However, they are happy with the news we regularly exchange, the signs of affection they receive and there is a great happiness when we spend a few days together. My grandfather told me : "As Louis Chedid says in a song, we must tell people that we love them".
I therefore conclude from this "interview/testimony" that retirement is an opportunity to continue in our passions, never to stop learning about everything, test new occupations...but also that it's important to stay close (not always geologically but always to the heart) of our family and to tell them of the affection that we give to them.
