1. General Ideas: how plastic affects the sea ( 1 point)
2.
a) It was discovered that plastic harms wildlife and introduces dangerous chemicals into marine ecosystems. ( 2 points)
b) Plastic does not biodegrade or break down naturally. It just fragments, or breaks into tiny pieces known as micro plastic, and can stick around for hundreds or perhaps even thousands of years. (
Also, as plastic contains dyes and fl ame retardants, when it is not disposed of properly, those additives end up in the environment.
Plastic also tends to absorb harmful chemicals such as
pesticides and industrial chemicals. So, if marine organisms eat that plastic, they may be exposed to higher concentrations of these contaminants. ( 2 points)
c) In 2015, it was calculated that at least 8 million tons of plastic trash are swept into the ocean from coasts every year. That’s the equivalent of a full garbage truck of plastic being dumped into the sea every minute. If current trends in plastic production and disposal continue, that fi gure will double by 2025. Last year, it was predicted that by 2050, ocean plastic will outweigh all the fish in the sea.
In 2015, it was detected that nearly 700 marine species have been observed entangled with or eating plastic. ( 2 points)
d. One of the biggest impacts of plastic pollution is its effect on sea life. Seals, sea turtles, and even whales can become entangled in plastic netting. Sea turtles eat plastic bags which resemble jellyfish, and pieces of micro plastic can resemble plankton. ( 2 points)

EXERCISE 1
A) Great part of the plastic is originate from earth and the rest from fishing industries. Exist different types of plastic but all of them are made bye polymer. ( 1 point)
B) One of the most problematic properties in the plastic id polymer, tha´s waterproof and durable. ( 1 point)
C) In 2015 was detected that around 700 marine species have consumed plastic or they have tangled on it. ( 2 points)
D) Widlife is a risk because plastic contamination, that affect directly to ecosystmes and marine animals. Marine turtles eat plastic bag, after that them die ( 2 points)

1. General ideas:
Plastic has become a global problem because it does not biodegrade or decompose naturally, therefore, it does not break, it only fragments remaining as particles for thousands of years, damaging wildlife by its dangerous chemicals and also marine life, it was even predicted that by 2050 ocean plastic would surpass all fish in the sea and adding that these marine organisms would eat that plastic, this being highly polluting and after all we could end up consuming these contaminated fish. ( 2 points)

2. As you read, answer these questions:
2.1 What was discovered overthe plastic?
Answer: plastic was found to harm wildlife and introduce dangerous chemicals into the marine ecosystem.
2.2 What are some properties of plastic that make it a problem pollutant? Cite evidence from the text. ( 2 points)
Answer: "Plastic does not biodegrade or break down naturally. It just fragments, or breaks into tiny pieces known as micro plastic, and can stick around for hundreds or perhaps even thousands of years." "if marine organisms eat
that plastic, they may be exposed to higher concentrations of these contaminants." ( 2 points)
2.3 What was detected in 2015?
Answer: it was calculated that at least 8 million tons of plastic trash are swept into the ocean from coasts every year. ( 2 points)
2.4. Why is wildlife at risk?
Answer: Because they end up getting entangled or consuming plastic and that could contaminate them, for example there are sea turtles that eat plastic bags that have been thrown into the sea. 1.- Has chile contributed to reducing the production of plastic? How? Do you think that there is anything else that should be done? Give examples
Answer: In my opinion, no. since every year has not seen an advance, although attempts have been made to recycle, it does not seem to turn out very well, because the sense of wanting to help seems to last simply for the moment, but this issue is not yet a lost case, you can still help with the situation of plastic by creating much more awareness of it and giving access to help, apart from not allowing companies (which are usually the ones that pollute the most with plastic) to reduce a little. ( 2 points)

2.- How do you think we can contribute to the reduction of plastic at home and school?

A) Plastic in contact with the environment generates a myriad of problems in the environment, for example, on land, chlorinated plastics (which last more than 100 years) can release harmful chemicals into the soil, which can then leach into the groundwater or other water sources in the vicinity. This can cause serious damage to species that consume the water. And if we give as an example the time that polystyrene bags last, their decomposition time is more than 4 centuries being the most polluting, for these reasons we must be more aware of what we throw away every day and the damage we can cause. ( 2 points)

b) Indeed most of the plastics found in the sea originate on land but if we take into account the pollution that comes from marine industries such as shipping and fishing. Its consequences are that the ocean receives a large part of the CO2 generated worldwide, CO2 acidifies water altering living organisms, loss of habitats, extinction of species and increase in sea temperature. ( 2 points)

c) from my point of view I believe that in this way the use of plastic would decrease considerably but only if it is easily accessible to people, the common plastic will be replaced more easily, so we can have a more favorable option for the environment and living beings.

1.- General idea: The increase of plastic in the environment. ( 1 point)
2.- a) What was discovered is that it can be harmful but it can also be useful since with its chemical components it can be molded, resistant and light. ( 2 points)
b) It harms wildlife and introduces dangerous chemicals into marine ecosystems. Once plastic enters the environment, it takes a long time to decompose, plastic does not biodegrade or decompose naturally. It simply fragments or breaks into small pieces known as microplastics, and can stay for hundreds or perhaps even thousands of years. ( 2 points)
c) In 2015 it was observed that more than 700 marine species have become entangled or are eating away at the plastic that is thrown into the seas. ( 2 points)
d) Because in plastics there are some chemical substances that are very dangerous for both wildlife and the environment, and when plastic is in marine life it takes a long time to dispose of. ( 2 points)
b) These percentages are thanks to the human who consumes a lot of plastic either per day or per year, but if we realize what pollution from marine industries throws away much more since for them to process everything they have to do They release a lot of carbon dioxide and that affects the seas a lot for the reason that they do not grow well and that the animals get intixed with it.
