Broken Promises

When I read this part of the book it really broke my heart. This is what Jeannette is saying to us, "He had explained that he was going to hire a truck to cart the garbage to the dump all at once. But he never got around to that, either, and as Brian and I watched, the hole for the Glass Castle's foundation slowly filled with garbage." The promise Rex had made to his children was broken into pieces. He had dug a hole, which gave them hope and they designed their rooms on the blue prints. This showed the kids that their dad was never going to build the Glass Castle and just like this broken promise he was never going to be able to complete his promises. The kids must have been emotionally broken just like this man, but it also helped them not make the same mistakes as their parents.

Unconditional Love

"But despite all the hell-raising and destruction and chaos he had created in our lives, I could not imagine what my life would be like- what the world would be like- without him in it." Rex tells Jeannette that he has an illness and he's dying. Jeannette is thinking this to herself, but it makes me think how she has unconditional love for her parents. She mentions it herself, Rex caused their childhood to be full of destruction, but even though it did, she can't imagine what it would be like without him. This was a way Jeannette was showing us that she forgave them, all of it because her love for them was greater than keeping all the anger of what could have been. Jeannette gave them money and gifts just like this picture shows, her love was unconditional.

Chaos v. Order

There are many examples of this theme throughout the book, but one that really captivated my eye is when Jeannette mentions this "Brian, who had wanted to be a cop ever since he'd had to call a policeman to our house in Phoenix to breakup a fight between Mom and Dad", wow that's very interesting to read. Brian wanted order, the total opposite of his dad who didn't like the Man and wanted to rule for himself. It's fascinating to see how a chaotic environment can produce order, just like this tangled rope, Rex was never structured, but we see Brian become a cop and have a clean and neat home.

"The second was that, like Lori, I was going to get out of Welch. T he sooner the better. Before finishing high school if I could." After being whipped by her dad Jeannette makes two decisions. She was no longer going to rely on her parents to get them out of Welch, so she was going to take matters into her own hands and start earning money to get out of there. She knew it wasn't an easy task, but she was determined to get out of there because she knew if she didn't she would stay there her whole life. Jeannette even bought the piggy back the next day and put five dollars in it to start, she said it would be the beginning of her escape fund. She was mature and didn't want this life so she knew that she had to be self sufficient because her parents wouldn't help her. This man knows it is hard, but just like Jeannette they aren't going to give up, they will succeed.

Rex knows the one person who always listened to him and believed him was Jeannette. That's why he takes her to the bar. "After a couple of days, he wanted me to go out with I'm again to some bar, but I said no." Jeannette had had it with her dad already, she was really hurt that he sold her out to some guy. This is when she comes to understand her dad's behavior and how he isn't going to change. She also learns what's right and what's wrong. All her siblings don't play along with their parent's acts, but Jeannette had been doing that for a long time, finally at age 13 she realizes her parents are the worst and how she doesn't want to live like that, let alone earn money like that. That's why she gets a job and starts earning up money. She must have been frustrated with herself, like in this picture, but she was also thinking of what she had to do, to not end up like her parents.

Acceptance

"We started talking about some of Dad's great escapades: letting me pet the cheetah, taking us Demon Hunting, giving us stars for Christmas. "We should drink a toast to Rex, John," said... We raised our glasses." I think this part of the book shows the acceptance of the Walls kids towards their parents. The fact that they talked about those memories at the table, makes me think how they were probably laughing at some of it. It was five years after their father's death, looking back and talking about their past without getting into an argument means they have truly accepted that they didn't have the best childhood nor the best parents. This picture shows how the Walls family still had Christmas together, despite being who they are and knowing you can't change them.
