Read the letter and watch the video on the Utah School District that decided to allow families to opt out of a Black History curriculum. What are your thoughts? Should this be an example of "voice and choice" for families and students? Do you believe that this should be an option? Why or why not? Why do you think the school district made this decision? What does this say about the school district? Is this a school district you would want to be apart of, why or why not? Would your perception of JCGCS change if your families were provided the same option? Do you think JCGCS would ever make this decision? Explain.

I wouldn't respect this school as much because that is an important part of American history and it shouldn't be allowed to be skipped. This school is a very diverse school and it would make everyone disappointed in this school because they don't teach about the truth of American history and especially since this has shown it's ability to teach important subjects like this. This clearly a school that doesn't care about black history because they had a small number of Black students in their school so they thought nobody would know or care but they were caught by NBA players and they removed the option.

It is so crazy how people still have the mindset that black history shouldn't be spoken about and should just be kept hidden. I do think that black history should be apart of students curium. Like everyone says, racism is taught, so them saying they do not want to learn about black history is like them saying they do not care about the pain and truma black people have been through. If JCGCS decided to do that, I would be shocked and know that they are in the wrong. Lastly, it shows overall that, that district is racist and aren't aware about their surrondings.

I think that choice was extremely dumb to even consider. Just because parents don't want their kids to learn about that doesn't mean anything. The school can teach the kids whatever they want as long as it's appropriate and they understand the full story. Black history isn't a separate history, its a part of American history. The only thing parents should be able to opt out of is maybe discussions about extremely violent or inappropriate events, and that should only be an option if the kids are pretty young.

To be honest if some parents don't want their kids to learn about black history then so be it. They're the ones who are going to miss out on learning the wonderful things that we have done as black people. I have no idea why the school district made this in option they must be slow. This says that they don't care about black history. But they should cause we helped build lots of this country.

Honestly in my opinion, I think these things should not be taken out of the curriculum because this is important, it is history. Why would you, and how could you take that opportunity away from your child just because they wanted to learn. I think having that mindset is a really bad thing and if our school did that it would just be unfair. Why and how could you this is very important and they want to tell you and inform you about all of this information because it is important and it made America equal again. Who wouldn't want your kids to learn history and to be well rounded in all subjects. It just makes me sick and disgusted that parents would do that to their own kids education.

After watching the video and reading the background, I feel very concerned for our country's future and how many people really care about our history. The fact that our own American history was an option for some people to learn about really says a lot about the privilege these people have. Even though no families had chosen to opt out of it, it still sickens me that someone thought this was a good idea for the students. This should absolutely NOT be an option, because this is American history we're talking about. If people choose to not learn about it, then that allows them to be ignorant to what happened in our past. Not only this, but students won't know where our country has come from, or what we strive to change about it. This fuels the fire or racism and ignorance in our country, and fortifies white privilege.

However I don't think was nesscarily an act out of hate. From what I understand no families signed up so Nobody had an issue with it and the immediately stopped the program. I honestly think because of the racial tension they were trying to not allow that in there school I don't know I feel like it just was gone about the wrong thing. Not saying the principals actions were correct but i don't think they came into this with a harmful intent. I do think black history is important to learn and a great thing that must be taught to to keep all races and children, and adults to be educated on all histories.

After reading this, I'm genuinely surprised that this was an actual option. I understand that the school was trying to deal with "concerned parents" but why would they be concerned about their kids learning about black history, which is still part of American history regardless if they were black or not. I think that this wasn't nessecarily "voice and choice" for families and students because the ones who are learning that in the first place are the students not the parents so why would they opt out for what their kids are learning. Second, opting out of black History month just because it's black history would be like opting out of a chunk of general history. People can't choose to opt out of Math class just because they want to so why should that be a choice for most anything else? I know WHY they made the descicion, but I don't nessecarily think it was the right one because by saying they could opt out of learning about this, they're somehow conveying the message that it's okay to opt out of learning of certain issues we have i society, and the people who don't learn about the issue sometimes ARE the issue. I think my perception of JCGCS would definitely change if they had this option because we're a school that takes pride in learning about differnt cultures and accomplishments of everyone in our diverce soviety and student body and if they had the option to opt out of just one of them or even multiple, I think that's somewhat disrespectful.

Why would a school to now make it mandetory for there students to learn about something that changed history. Not even that our country was mostly built off of slavery so I don't know why the school wouldn't include this in the mandatory curriculum. Even if the parents don't want to there child to learn these sensitive topic they would still have to learn about slavery, BLM, and civil right movements eventually so it would be better to learn it now instead of them being clues about the outside world.

Frankly, we live in this world. A world where people have hatred, prejudice, and bias against other individuals. Why would anybody make learning about Black History Month optional? This is a very saddening and disappointing topic but this is what we have all come to. Black History Month is on February which is the SHORTEST month throughout the entire year. There are only 28 days in February, on leap year there is 29. It is sad how we have gone through so much and yet we are STUCK on racism. For example, we have dealt with slavery, segregation, the holocaust, etc and YET we STILL can´t overcome the racism, hatred, prejudice, and bias in this world? There is not much needed to be said except we have gone through so much why can´t we just overcome this?

What person thought in this day and age that this would be a good idea. This shouldn't even be a thought that comes to mind. If you are a parent and agree to this than that is like opting your child of learning algebra, it is something you need to know and will be used in real life. Yes my perception would change because this is not right especially as a school which such a large population of unsinglular races. Also one questions that is bugging me that if the parents think like this and make their child do it, do they ask how the child feels, and how much freedom does the child get, thats the real question. There is freedom of voice and then you got wrong and right, people nowadays should be taught to find the difference. Also if you don't like them being black think of them as people, normal people, it really shouldn't be that hard.

I guess i understand the people dont want to learn about all teh harsh truth about what happend but they need to understand that this is reality and all of this was actually happening to people. An normally during black history month most teachers mostly shine light on "unsung heros" Its usually just larning about people who didnt recive teh credit that they should've. Honestly I find it pretty disrespectful that they can just CHOOSE not to learn about black history. Like, we cant choose just to NOT learn about the white washed american history in teh texts books soo why should people be able to choose whether or no to learn about things that acutally happened.

My thoughts and feelings about this video is disappointed. Why would parents opt their kids that they don't want them to not participate in something important and educating? I bet that if they were learning something about romans or indians, they wouldn't tell them to opt out of the activites the school planned for them. The fact that the kids couldn't have a say into what their parents are deciding for them is so rude. Black History Month is apart of our history and country because without Black History, we wouldn't have what we have today. I am still confused on why white people don't like blacks. Black people are human too. Just because we have different skin colors, doesn't mean you can see us as monsters or a threat.

Using our "voice and choice" and labelling it as our "Civil Rights" in order to refuse to engage in learning about black figures and history is shocking. Since Black history is a huge part of American History and that is making them not learn how this country was built and how it was was built on people of color. This can tell that maybe the school did not choose there may have been parent that were bugging the school to do this for their child to opt out of Black history month and they may have gotten to the school. But this is history school are meant to teach us this not hide it from and seal it away when ever we learn about black history new voices are heard and more people want to talk about all the injustice as well as discrimination.I believe my view on Jcgcs would since we are a diverse school with many people of color in our building.
