Informed learning design

I've been doing learning design for well over a decade now - but informed by experimenting with single interventions. Seeing now how learner analytics can inform choices between options using comparative and larger-scale data.

On the other hand, I'd also want to ensure that decisions aren't led by what's best for the majority, which is a danger of large-scale aggregated data.

Thoughts from a newbie

I'm new to the LD community, though I suppose I have been involved in curriculum design in one way or another for over 20 years. My take-away is the realisation that there is so much fantastic LD work going on in lots of institutions. I am thinking about the challenge of embedding this as standard practice everywhere.
Tony Burke - University of Westminster
t.j.burke@westminster.ac.uk

Learning Design as translation

My main takeaway is that learning design seems to involve an act of translating the evidence of 'what works' into specific contexts, and then translating it back to a 'model' for re-use. Both in specific instances of design (modules, classroom or online activities) and at the broader scale (academics to management and back, institutions / SIG to policy makers and back!)

My first LD-CIN meeting felt like coming ‘home’ 😊 – the useful overview of LD projects by JISC and the OU made me realise how long I’ve been working in this field but it's too often been disguised by emphasis on technology. Great to see the design of learning (with or without technology) in pole position 😊 thank you for an inspiring day
Sue Watling
s.watling@hull.ac.uk
